Novel salts of morpholino-(2,3-b)phenoxazonium are prepared by condensing a substituted paranitrosoaniline and a 6-hydroxy phenomorpholine. The novel salts are incorporated into hair dye and hair setting lotion compositions.

Hair setting lotions, hair dye compositions and hair lacquers containing the diazamerocyanines, preferably in alcoholic solutions, are also disclosed. A process and composition for dyeing keratinic fibers, particularly, human hair, in which tetrazolium salts are applied to the fibers in a colorless oxidized state and reduced to colored insoluble formazanes by reducing agents. The reducing agents are used so that the keratinic bonds are not disrupted and can be used at the same time that a permanent wave process is applied. Also, various shades can be obtained using leuco derivative dyes which become oxidized when functioning as reducing agents.

A hair dyeing composition comprises an aqueous solution of a hair coloring amount of a dye compound having the formula A-NR(CH2)n-NHR'' wherein R and R'' each independently are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl and lower alkoxy, n is an integer of 2-6 and A is selected from the group consisting of anthroquinone, azo and benzene. The composition contains 0.01 to 3 percent of said dye compound and has a pH of about 4-10.
