Abstract: A ceramic discharge vessel in a green state prior to assembly includes a fir st discharge vessel part in a green state, a second discharge vessel part in a green stat e, wherein the first and second discharge vessel parts form a discharge vessel when joined together, and a first capillary attached to the first discharge vessel part and a second capillary attached to one of the first and second discharge vessel parts. To facilitate joining th e first and second discharge vessel parts, a first removable handle is temporarily attached to the first discharge vessel part for maneuvering the first discharge vessel part, and a second removable handle is temporarily attached to the second discharge vessel part for maneuvering the second discharge vessel part.

Abstract: A method of molding a ceramic vessel includes compressing a water-soluble powder, suspending the compressed powder shape in a mold, injecting a ceramic moldin g mixture into the mold, and dissolving the compressed powder by flushing the vessel with water. A core for making an arc discharge vessel that has a discharge chamber and two capillaries includes a molded core of the water-soluble powder having a shape of the discharge chamber, and preferably two capillary-forming pins extending from the molded core. An apparatus for removing the molded core that includes a water reservoir that preferably flushes water through the vessel and dissolves molded core.

De ontladingskamer bezit een vrijwel symmetrisch longitudinaal oppervlaktetemperatuurprofiel tijdens bedrijf in een stabiele thermische toestand, waarbij het verschil tussen de maximum en de mimimum temperaturen van het profiel minder is dan ongeveer 30 graden Celsius, en de maximum temperatuur van het profiel minder is dan ongeveer 900 graden Celsius. Hierdoor wordt een langere werkzame levensduur en hogere gemiddelde wandbeladingen mogelijk maakt.

Abstract: An amalgam assembly for a fluorescent lamp includes an exhaust tubulation closed at a free end thereof, a glass ball disposed in the tubulation, and a mercury amalgam body disposed in the tubulation between the glass ball and the tubulation closed end. The tubulation is provided with a pinched portion comprising a plurality of inwardly extending dimples separated from each other and adapted to engage the glass ball to retain the glass ball on a central axis of the tubulation. The glass ball rests on the dimples concentrically and gaps between the dimples allow gas to pass therethrough between the glass ball and an inside surface of the tubulation.

The quartz arc tube has a cylindrical design which promotes a nearly symmetric longitudinal surface temperature profile during operation. The profile has a maximum temperature of about 900.degree.C which allows for longer operating life at high average wall loadings.

Abstract: An arc discharge lamp comprises an arc chamber having an amalgam tip attache d to and communicating with it. The communication comprises a narrow tubular extensio n that penetrates the amalgam tip for a distance less than the depth of the tip. An amalgam that includes bismuth is contained within the amalgam tip. This construction allo ws operation of the lamp in any position and prevents the bismuth in the amalgam from penetrating the lamp and poisoning the phosphor.

Abstract: A reflector lamp 10 has a vitreous outer envelope 12 formed of a concave reflect or 14 and a light-transmitting 16 cover peripherally sealed thereto. The concave reflector and cover are symmetrically arrayed about a longitudinal axis 18 and a substantially cylin drical, hollow neck 20 having a given depth is affixed to the concave reflector opposite the cover. The neck 20 also is symmetrically arrayed about the longitudinal axis 18 and has a substantially closed bottom 21. At least two eyelets, 22, 24, respectively, are sealed in the bottom 21 and a light source capsule 26 is positioned in the concave reflector a nd aligned with the longitudinal axis 18. The light source capsule 26 has a first end 28 si tuated in the neck 20 and a second end 30 extending into the concave reflector. The light source capsule 26 comprises a quartz arc tube 32 containing an arc generating and susta ining medium and a surrounding aluminosilicate glass shroud 34. First and second condu ctive lead-ins 36, 38, respectively, are sealed into a first seal 40 formed at a first end 42 of the shroud 34. Each of the lead-ins 36, 38 has a first portion 44, 46, respectively, sealed in one of the eyelets 22, 24. The first conductive lead-in 36 has a second portion 48 extending interiorly of the shroud and connecting a first electrode 50 of the ar c tube and contains a bend or offset 49 to take expansion differences during operation. The second lead-in 38 has a second portion 54 terminating within the first seal 40. An oute r conductor 56 has a first end 58 sealed in a second end 60 of the shroud 34 and c onnects a second electrode 62 of the arc tube 32. A middle section 64 of the outer conduct or 56, which is surrounded by an electrically insulating sleeve 57 for at least part of its length, extends exteriorly of the shroud 34 and has a second end 66 connected to the sec ond said lead-in 38. A conventional screw base 68 completes the lamp.

Abstract: A closed-loop, tubular lamp envelope (50) and methods of manufacturing closed-loop, tubular lamp envelopes are disclosed. A dome (58) is formed at one end of a light-transmissive tube (52). A blister is molded on the dome (58), and a hole is formed in the molded blister. Next, a dome (62) is formed at the other end of the light-transmissive tube (52). A blister is formed on the dome (62), and a second hole is formed in the molded blister. Each of the molded blisters includes a rim (56,60) which defines the respective hole. A second tube (54) is processed in the same way. The respective rims (56,70;60,66) at the ends of the first (52) and second (54) tubes are fused together to form a sealed, closed-loop lamp envelope (50). Each tube (52,54) may be bent to provide a desired shape of the lamp envelope (50). The molding of the rims (56,60,66,70) insures that the sealing surfaces match.
