Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To omit a glow bottle so as to lower the costs of parts and assembly by arranging an auxiliary starter and electrically connecting the auxiliary starter to a distal electrode body, which is made of a conductive member surrounding a capillary body extending from a first end part of an arc tube and positioned in a second end part, in an electrode structural body. SOLUTION: An auxiliary starter 38 surrounding a capillary body 18 is positioned in the periphery of a second area 34". A conductive member 40 provided with end parts 42, 44 is electrically connected to a distal electrode end 32 of an electrode structural body 24, via a connecting wire material 45. The auxiliary starter 38 is made of a coil of a wire material 46 wound up once (1 turn) at least. This structure is a mechanism for capacity coupling ionization performed not in a separate glow bottle, in a gaseous environment of an outer jacket, or in a gaseous environment of an inner jacket but in a leg of an arc tube itself. Abstract: An arc tube for a discharge lamp comprises an hermetically sealed hollow body containing an arc generating and sustaining medium therein and having first and second ends. An electrode receiving capillary extends from each end and an electrode structure is positioned in each of the capillaries. Each of the electrode structures comprises a proximal, electrode end projecting into the interior of the hollow body, a distal end projecting exteriorly of the capillary, and an intermediate section therebetween, a first area of the intermediate section being sealed to the capillary in an hermetic manner and a second area of the intermediate section being exposed to the medium. A starting aid comprises an electrically conducting member surrounding the capillary extending from the first end at the second area of the intermediate section and is electrically connected to the distal end of the electrode structure positioned in the second end. The starting aid provides a capacitively coupled ionization mechanism for starting the lamp.

Abstract: A reflector lamp 10 has a vitreous outer envelope 12 formed of a concave reflect or 14 and a light-transmitting 16 cover peripherally sealed thereto. The concave reflector and cover are symmetrically arrayed about a longitudinal axis 18 and a substantially cylin drical, hollow neck 20 having a given depth is affixed to the concave reflector opposite the cover. The neck 20 also is symmetrically arrayed about the longitudinal axis 18 and has a substantially closed bottom 21. At least two eyelets, 22, 24, respectively, are sealed in the bottom 21 and a light source capsule 26 is positioned in the concave reflector a nd aligned with the longitudinal axis 18. The light source capsule 26 has a first end 28 si tuated in the neck 20 and a second end 30 extending into the concave reflector. The light source capsule 26 comprises a quartz arc tube 32 containing an arc generating and susta ining medium and a surrounding aluminosilicate glass shroud 34. First and second condu ctive lead-ins 36, 38, respectively, are sealed into a first seal 40 formed at a first end 42 of the shroud 34. Each of the lead-ins 36, 38 has a first portion 44, 46, respectively, sealed in one of the eyelets 22, 24. The first conductive lead-in 36 has a second portion 48 extending interiorly of the shroud and connecting a first electrode 50 of the ar c tube and contains a bend or offset 49 to take expansion differences during operation. The second lead-in 38 has a second portion 54 terminating within the first seal 40. An oute r conductor 56 has a first end 58 sealed in a second end 60 of the shroud 34 and c onnects a second electrode 62 of the arc tube 32. A middle section 64 of the outer conduct or 56, which is surrounded by an electrically insulating sleeve 57 for at least part of its length, extends exteriorly of the shroud 34 and has a second end 66 connected to the sec ond said lead-in 38. A conventional screw base 68 completes the lamp.
