    Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein relate to methods and systems for providing adaptive server selection in wireless communications. In an embodiment, an access terminal is configured to determine a forward link quality metric associated with each of a plurality of sectors serviced by a plurality of access points; assign credits to each sector in relation to the forward link quality metric; and change a data source control (DSC) value if the credits accumulated for a non-serving sector at a DSC change boundary is greater than a predetermined threshold, where the non-serving sector and the serving sector for the AT belong to different cells. The access terminal is further configured to change a data rate control (DRC) cover in accordance with the DSC change. The use of DSC provides an early indication of handoff, thereby allowing the service outage associated with server switching to be substantially reduced. A method for handoff is further disclosed using DSC as early indication of handoff, which also trigger multitasking forward traffic for the access terminal to all access points.

    Abstract: Techniques for deriving sample timing for multiple signal instances received on multiple antennas for a given propagation path. In one scheme, a DLL is maintained for each path, and each DLL tracks the timing of the best signal instance for the assigned path. In another scheme, a DLL is maintained for each path, and each DLL tracks the average timing of the multiple signal instances for the assigned path. To reduce timing jitter, the SINR of a signal instance may be estimated for a number of different time offsets. The loop filter for the DLL is initially updated in the normal manner. If a change in the time offset used for the sample timing is detected, then the SINRs for the new and prior offsets are compared. The new time offset is used if the associated SINR is better. Otherwise, the prior time offset is retained and used.

    Abstract: An optimum combiner that reduces the amount of interference imposed upon a first base station (102) by transmissions of other base stations within the same communication system. Two antennas (112, 114) are used to receive transmissions within a receiving station (110). A rake receiver is coupled to each antenna (112, 114). By optimally combining the signals that are received by each independent finger of the rake receiver, interference that is correlated between a finger associated with the first antenna (112) and a finger associated with the second antenna (114) can be minimized with respect to the desired signal. Optimum combining requires determination of optimum combining coefficients. A max-ratio combining algorithm may be substituted for the optimal combining algorithm depending upon interference characteristics.

    Abstract: A system and method for reducing average idle current in a telecommunications system handset by decreasing the power when demodulation of the incoming signal and decoding of FOCC data stream is unnecessary is provided. The system and method supplant the need to decode all five repeated FOCC data words. The system performs various testing on each of the five data words as they are received. If the data words satisfy particular conditions, such as comprising control filler words or match one another based on the result of testing, no further processing of words occurs until the next sync is received and sleep mode is initiated. According to a further feature, the system may erase the sync/dotting sequence if and only if the prior sync word is successfully decoded. The system and method support both A and B slotting and power down components of the handset, such as RF circuitry and/or data sync timers.

    Abstract: An automatic gain control (AGC) and D.C. offset correction method and apparatus for controlling signal power of a received RF signal within a dual mode quadrature receiver is disclosed herein. In a preferred implementation the automatic gain control apparatus may be adjusted to provide a desired control response to various fading characteristics of a received FM, FSK, GMSK, QPSK, or BPSK signal. The AGC apparatus includes an adjustable gain amplifier having an input port for receiving an input signal, a control port for receiving a gain control signal, and an output port for providing an output signal. A quadrature downconverter coupled to the output port serves to translate the frequency of the output signal to a baseband frequency, thereby producing baseband signals. In a preferred implementation the downconverter is operative to map the carrier frequency of the output signal to a baseband frequency offset by a predetermined margin from D.C. Two high gain active lowpass filters provide out-of-band signal rejection for the baseband signals. A D.C. feedthrough suppression loop, disposed to receive said baseband signal, suppresses D.C. offsets produced by the downconverter and lowpass filters, hence providing a compensated baseband signal. The AGC apparatus is further disposed to generate a received power signal based on the power of the output signal. A saturating integrator compares the received power signal to a reference signal and produces the gain control signal by integrating or by refraining from integration based on values of the reference, received power signal, and gain control signals, thereby extending the usable dynamic range of the receiver for FM mode.
