    Abstract: A system and method for reducing the interference experienced by sensitive electronic devices, such as hearing aids, operative in the vicinity of CDMA user communication devices. A transmitter of the communications device is configured to transmit signal power substantially continuously at a full rate power level irrespective of the variable data rate at which the transmitter would otherwise be operative. In a first embodiment, a variable rate vocoder within the transmitter is directed to perform full-rate vocoding, irrespective of an instantaneous level of user speech. In a second embodiment, a microprocessor builds full-rate frames using repeated versions of code symbols generated by the vocoder. In a third embodiment, the microprocessor builds full rate frames by generating signaling bits of a predetermined pattern to pad otherwise non-full frames.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a cellular telephone system that supports performing an inter-system soft handoff is described. A subscriber unit generates a pilot strength measurement report when the pilot channel from a base station is detected. When a base station controller receiving the pilot strength measurement report determines that the base station is part of a second cellular telephone system, a inter-system soft handoff request is generated. An admission control subsystem receives the inter-system soft handoff and either grants or denies the request base on the traffic level with the second cellular telephone system. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the traffic level is determined based on link load messages received periodically by the admission control subsystem that are generated by an interface port coupled to an interconnect between the first cellular telephone system and the second cellular telephone system. The link load message include peak queue length and average frame rate information.

    Abstract: A priority access channel assignment system and a messaging protocol allow wireless mobile stations to place calls having differing priority levels. A mobile station originates a call, which may automatically include a request for priority access or may require manual intervention by the user to request priority access. If system resources are unavailable to process the call immediately, the origination message is processed by a base station and a mobile switching center using a plurality of messaging protocols to determine the time at which the call was originated and a priority level associated with the call. Based on the priority level and arrival time, the base station places the call in an appropriate position within a queue. Higher priority calls are placed in a higher position in the queue than lower priority calls. Calls having identical priority are placed in the queue in order of the time of arrival.

    Abstract: The mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication units such as mobile telephones. Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway is connected to a set of individual service providers such as local telephone systems. The individual service providers may be constrained for various reasons such as contractual or other legal constraints to handle communications only from subscriber units located in certain geographical areas such as within only certain countries or portions of countries. For a mobile communication from a particular subscriber unit, the gateway selects a service provider capable of handling the communication. In one implementation, the selection is based upon the location of the subscriber unit and upon any preferences specified by the subscriber unit. In other implementations, the selection is based on other parameters such as the altitude, speed or velocity of the subscriber unit or the time of day or date upon which the communication is initiated.

    Abstract: In a digital communication system for communicating digital information, the digital communication system having a forward link and a reverse link, a system and method for communicating a data packet. The system comprises a communicating transceiver, from among a number of digital transceivers, for sending the data packet on a random access channel over the reverse link and for receiving the digital information from the forward link. The system also comprises a base station for receiving the data packet on the random access channel from the reverse link and for sending the digital information over the forward link. The digital transceivers share the random access channel. The digital transceivers have a bandwidth demand. The system may also include a dedicated channel for communicating the data packet between the communicating transceiver and the base station and a processor for switching from the random access channel to the dedicated channel when the bandwidth demand exceeds a first threshold, and for switching from the dedicated channel to the random access channel when the bandwidth demand drops below a second threshold. The system is well suited for use in CDMA applications.

    Abstract: An apparatus for providing authentication of a mobile station in a wireless communication system. The present invention takes the number dialed by the mobile station user and computes the 24 bit number (AUTH-DATA) for authentication in accordance with a hashing function that has the following characteristics. The hashing function takes as its input at least the entire dialed digit string contained in the request for service and the number of digits. In a preferred embodiment, the ordering of the digits affects the result, as well as, the values of the digits. The preferred embodiment of the hashing function also accepts some or all of the mobile station identifier data. The function provides as output a number of suitable size for input to a second calculation of an authentication signature, such as the 24 bits required for AUTH-DATA. The output number is created in such a way that there is a minimum likelihood that other sets of dialed digits may create the same result.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing soft hand-off in a mobile communication system. In current systems, members of an active set of base stations (4, 4A, 4B, 4C) are determined by comparing measured pilot energy with fixed thresholds. The value of providing a redundant communication link to a mobile station (2) primarily depends on the energy of other signals being provided to the mobile station (2). In the present invention, the signal strength of each signal transmitted by other base stations (4, 4A, 4B, 4C) in communication with a mobile station (2) is considered when determining whether to add a base station to the set of base stations (4, 4A, 4B, 4C) in communication with the remote station. A base station is added only if the signal received from that base station provides sufficient added value to justify the impact on system capacity.
