    Abstract: To provide control signals allowing compensation of stylus tracking in eccentric grooves of a video disc 10, a stylus 11 carries an electrode 13 disposed between first and second electrodes 14, 15 fixedly mounted on a motor driven carriage 8 to which stylus 11 is compliantly mounted. The capacitances of the variable capacitors thus formed vary with the displacement of electrode 13, and hence of stylus 11, relative to carriage 8. In Figure 1, complementary a.c. signals V1, V2 are applied to electrodes 14, 15 so that the algebraic sum of these signals capacitively coupled to electrode 13 is indicative of the position of the stylus. The output signal V3 from electrode 13, via processing circuit 29, controls a motor 31 to move carriage 8 so as to restore electrode 13, and thus the stylus 11, to a null position. In Figure 8 (not shown), an a.c. signal which has been amplitude modulated by voltage variable impedances is applied to the first and second electrodes whereby the time average of the signal summed at the stylus related electrode is indicative of the stylus position.

An arrangement is also described which, in response to the reading of a particular sequence of data from the disc indicating the end of the record, disables the read head.

    Abstract: Periodic biasing of video disc player signal correction servo to the center of its control range avoids the loss-of-loop gain which otherwise could occur if the servo were continuously biased and minimizes loop stabilization time. Periodic biasing is provided by means of a timing circuit, responsive to a luminance signal transition above blanking level, which enables the servo phase error detector and simultaneously enables a precharging circuit which charges the servo error voltage holding capacitor to a level corresponding to a zero error servo condition. The timing circuit disables the precharging circuit a predetermined time subsequent to an opposite transition of the luminance signal and disables the phase detector subsequent to disabling of the precharging circuit. The period between disabling of the precharging circuit and disabling of the phase detector encompasses the color burst interval of the horizontal sync pulse and may be controlled by selection of offset and slope parameters of an integrator in the timing circuit.

    Abstract: In a video processing system including comb filters for separating interleaved luminance and chrominance components, the time of occurrence of the color synchronizing component of the composite color video signal is detected after the comb filtering and separating of the luminance and chrominance components. The composite signal components include spurious frequency variations which accompany the composite signal during playback from a video disc. A first phase locked loop coupled to a frequency translator is used to remove the spurious frequency variations from the separated and frequency translated chrominance components. A second phase locked loop is connected between a second frequency translator and a clock controlled delay line. The second phase locked loop tracks the spurious frequency variations in a manner to assure that accurate combing of the component signals occurs at the output of the comb filters. The same reference frequency is used in the first phase locked loop as well as in the second frequency translator.
