The invention concerns electric vehicles and, more particularly for such vehicles, a method for braking the vehicle according to the speed with which the foot is raised from the accelerator pedal. The invention is characterised in that the positions of the accelerator pedal are read and the pedal displacement speed (VAC) between two consecutive positions of the pedal is computed (40). If said speed is negative (42), which means that the foot is raised, the system computes a braking torque value (50, 54) modifying the set point value (CC) of the electric engine torque, said braking torque value being for example proportional to the pedal displacement speed. Said set point value is memorized (56) when the pedal is completely raised. The invention is applicable to electric vehicles.
