    Abstract: In this invention, a multivariable transmitter providing an output representative of mass flow has a dual microprocessor structure. The first microprocessor compensates digitized process variables and the second microprocessor computes the mass flow as well as arbitrating communications between the transmitter and a master. In a second embodiment of the present invention, a first microprocessor compensates digitized process variables, a second microprocessor computes an installation specific physical parameter such as mass flow and a third microprocessor arbitrates real-time communications between the transmitter and a master.

    Abstract: A transmitter for use in a process control system has externally accessible actuators for permitting external adjustment of the zero and span (or full scale) settings of the transmitter . the transmitter has an explosion-proof housing which includes an interior chamber in which transmitter circuitry is located. Each of the actuators includes a movable magnet which operates a magnetic reed switch located within the interior chamber of the housing through a wall of the housing . Each of the magnets is mounted on a movable actuator which extends into a blind hole in a wall of the housing . By moving the magnet within its hole , the corresponding reed switch can be changed from a non-actuated to an actuated state. When the zero reed switch is actuated, the transmitter circuitry adjusts its output so that the present value of the parameter represents a process zero. When the span (or full scale) reed switch is actuated, the transmitter circuitry adjusts its output so that the present value of the sensed parameter represents a process maximum.

    Abstract: An industrial process control transmitter has a modular construction, with a detector module and an output module electrically connected together by a serial bus . The output module includes a microcomputer , a modem for digital communication over the two-wire loop, analog output circuitry for controlling loop current, a digital-to-analog converter , and a memory for storing calibration factors and D/A characterization factors. The detector module includes several sensors with associated circuitry to convert the sensor signals to digital signals. The detector module also includes a memory which contains characterization factors unique to the sensors which can be used by the microcomputer to correct the digital values provided by the detector circuitry the microcomputer of the output module is considered the master unit, and all of the circuits of the detector board which interface with the serial bus are considered slave units. Data is collected by the microcompuer when a selected detector circuit provides an interrupt over the serial bus . The microcomputer then provides a select signal requesting data. The detector module provides data from the sensor circuits in a selected order in response to the select signal.

    Abstract: A smart field-mounted control unit, for controlling a process, receives signals and sends a command output over a two-wire circuit which powers the control unit. An input section receives the signals, which can be instructions representative of commands or instruction sets, process variables sensed by external control units or setpoints representative of a desired process state. The instructions are representative of a control requirement of the process and adjust a controlling section in the control unit to generate the command output in conformance with the control requirement. The command output can be a function of the difference between the process setpoint and a process variable, or a function of a linear combination of a process variable and its calculated time integral and time derivative functions. A sensing section in the control unit can sense and scale a process variable for generating the command output as well. The control unit can include a regulator section, controlled by the command output, which regulates application of a mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic or electromagnetic force applied to the process.

    Abstract: A pressure transmitter with a transmitter housing having an outer wall providing thermal resistance. The outer wall extends from an isothermal island at a first end to a heat sink island at a second end. The isothermal island includes a fluid inlet, and pressure and temperature sensors. The heat sink island includes a primary heat load device that is heat sunk to an outer shell of an electrical connector. The connector contacts carry a current controlled by the transmitter, and a portion of the current is conducted by a primary heat load device. A circuit board controls the current to represent the pressure. A high accuracy, temperature compensated current output represents pressure.
