    Abstract: Disclosed is a process for oxidizing ethane to acetic acid which comprises feeding ethane and a recycle gas to a fluidized bed reaction zone containing fluidized particulate solid oxidation catalyst, feeding a molecular oxygen-containing gas separately from said ethane to said reaction zone so that said molecular oxygen-containing gas first mixes with the major portion of the combustible hydrocarbon feed gases within the fluidized bed, said process including the steps of (1) cooling the gaseous effluent from the reaction zone, (2) separating most of the acetic acid in liquid form from the effluent gases, leaving a gaseous stream containing nearly all of the carbon oxides contained in said effluent, (3) purging a small portion of said gaseous stream and recycling most of said gaseous stream as part of the feed to said reaction zone, wherein said purging serves to prevent build-up of carbon oxides in the reaction zone, and said recycling serves to maintain a high proportion of carbon oxides in said reaction zone gases, thus aiding in moderating the temperature elevating effect of the highly exothermic oxidation reaction in said reaction zone.

    Abstract: A process for activating fluid bed catalysts useful for producing maleic anhydride from 4-carbon atom hydrocarbons consists in contacting the fluidized catalyst containing the mixed oxides of vanadium and phosphorus with oxygen and a reducing gas at least partially combustible with oxygen at elevated temperatures sufficient to cause such combustion, the molar ratio of reducing gas to oxygen being below the stiochiometric ratio required for complete combustion of the reducing gas. The activated catalysts are used to producing maleic anhydride from 4-carbon atom hydrocarbons.

    Abstract: A process is provided for preparing fluid bed catalysts containing the mixed oxides of vanadium and phosphorus prepared from a mixed phosphoric acid source. The process comprises(a) introducing at least one pentavalent vanadium compound into an organic liquid capable of reducing at least a portion of the vanadium to a valence state of +4;(b) effecting reduction of at least a portion of the vanadium to a valence state of +4;(c) contacting the vanadium with a mixed phosphorus component prior or subsequent to effecting said reduction, wherein said mixed phosphorus component comprises 75-90 weight percent orthophosphoric acid and 10-25 weight percent pyrophosphoric acid;(d) comminuting the catalyst precursor resulting from step (a)- (c);(e) introducing the catalyst precursor into water prior or subsequent to said comminuting to form an aqueous slurry; and(f) spray drying said slurry to form microspheroidal catalyst particles.The catalysts are used in the oxidation of C 4 -hydrocarbons, in particular n-butane to maleic anhydride.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a process for making acetic acid which comprises oxidizing ethane with molecular oxygen in a reaction zone at a pressure of at least 100 psig while the reactants are in contact with a solid catalyst having the elements and relative atomic proportions indicated by the empirical formula: VPaMbOx where M is one or more optional element selected from Co, Cu, Re, Fe, Ni, Nb, Cr, W, U, Ta, Ti, Zr, Zn, Hf, Mn, Pt, Pd, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ce, As, Ag, and Au, wherein a is 0.5 to 3, b is 0 to 1, and x is a number determined by the valence requirements of the other elements in the catalyst, and wherein said catalyst contains crystalline vanadyl pyrophosphate.
