Abstract: Disclosed is a multilayer paper or paperboard substrate having barrier properties against liquids, vapour, grease, detergents, oxygen or other gases, and useful as a food or liquid package, which substrate comprises; a first fibre based layer; a second layer comprising 0.1-10 g/m2 (dry) microfibrillated cellulose with a size of 10-100μm; a third layer comprising a polymer (such as polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate); and optionally a fourth layer comprising aluminium. Also disclosed is a process for the production of a paper or paperboard substrate as defined above, wherein the process comprises the steps of; providing a first fiber based layer; adding a second layer comprising 0.1-10 g/m2 (dry) microfibrillated cellulose with a size of 10-100μm; adding a third layer comprising a polymer, wherein the second layer is added to the first layer by coating and that the third layer is added to the second layer by lamination or extrusion coating, and wherein the forth layer which may be between the second and the third layers is added by use of atomic layer deposition (ALD).
