    Abstract: An automatic injector apparatus comprising an outer housing assembly, a hypodermic needle, first and second containers, a first liquid medicament ingredient in the first container and a second medicament ingredient in the second container, first and second pistons in the first and second containers respectively, a releasable stressed spring arrangement capable of being released twice, once for movement through a first piston moving stroke and second through a second piston moving stroke, a first releasing device operable in response to a first predetermined actuating procedure for accomplishing a first release of the spring arrangement so as to effect movement of the first piston through a liquid medicament ingredient moving stroke causing the liquid medicament ingredient to mix with the medicament ingredient in the second container to form liquid medicament and a second releasing device operable in response to a second actuating procedure for accomplishing a second release of the spring arrangement so as to effect movement of the second piston through an operative stroke causing the hypodermic needle to be moved into the muscle tissue of the patient and the liquid medicament to be moved through the needle into the muscle tissue of the patient.

    Abstract: The absorption of a scavenger of oxygen free radicals generated at the time of reperfusion or the absorption of an agent preventing the cytotoxic effects on healthy cells in a mammal. e.g. superoxide dismutase or S-aminotrimethyleneaminoethyl thiophosphate is enhanced by substantially simultaneously administering an absorption enhancing agent therefore, e.g. hydroxylamine or a non-toxic salt thereof. It is also part of the invention to inject WR-2721 intravenously or intramuscularly as a scavenger of oxygen free radicals even in the absence of an absorption enhancing agent.

    Abstract: @ A dual mode automatic injector (10) having a dual mode safety device (18) for preventing the release of the stressed spring assembly (16) except when it is desired to operate the medicament injecting assembly (14) by the stressed spring assembly. The dual mode safety device comprises a first part (66) including a pin portion (70) and an automatic removal portion (76, 78, 80 and 82) fixed to the rearward end of the pin portion. The dual mode safety device also includes a separate second part (68) and a connection (90, 92 and 94) between the first and second parts for (1) enabling the second part to be connected with the first part while the pin portion of the latter is in a safety position in a manual mode position wherein the first part is in rearward motion transmitting relation to the second part and (2) enabling the second part to be removed from the manual mode position while the pin portion of the first part is retained in its safety position. The second part includes a cap portion (88) of a size and shape to be conveniently manually grasped by a user and moved rearwardly in order to effect the removal of the pin portion from its safety position when the second part is in its manual mode position.
