    Abstract: A direct smelting process for producing iron and/or ferroalloys is provided, which involves forming a molten bath in a metallurgical vessel, supplying feed materials, injecting oxygen containing gas, generating upward movement of the molten material from the molten bath, wherein the oxygen-containing gas is injected by three or more lances, and entraining into the jets of oxygen containing gas a volume of top space gas that is 2-6 times the volume of the injected gas.

    Abstract: A VESSEL WHICH PRODUCES METAL FROM A METALLIFEROUS FEED MATERIAL BY A DIRECT SMELTING PROCESS IS DISCLOSED. THE VESSEL CONTAINS A MOLTEN BATH HAVING A METAL LAYER (15) AND A SLAG LAYER (16) ON THE METAL LAYER AND HAS A GAS CONTINUOUS SPACE (31) ABOVE THE SLAG LAYER. THE VESSEL INCLUDES A HEARTH FORMED OF REFRACTORY MATERIAL HAVING A BASE (3) AND SIDES (55) IN CONTACT WITH THE MOLTEN METAL AND SIDE WALLS (5) WHICH EXTEND UPWARDLY FROM THE SIDES (55) OF THE HEARTH AND ARE IN CONTACT WITH THE SLAG LAYER AND THE GAS CONTINUOUS SPACE. THE SIDE WALLS THAT CONTACT THE GAS CONTINUOUS SPACE INCLUDE WATER COOLED PANELS (57) AND A LAYER OF SLAG ON THE PANELS. THE VESSEL ALSO INCLUDES ONE OR MORE THAN ONE LANCE/TUYERE (13) EXTENDING DOWNWARDLY INTO THE VESSEL AND INJECTING AN OXYGEN-CONTAINING GAS INTO THE VESSEL ABOVE THE METAL LAYER AND A PLURALITY OF LANCES/TUYERES (11) INJECTING AT LEAST PART OF THE METALLIFEROUS FEED MATERIAL AND A CARBONACEOUS MATERIAL WITH A CARRIER GAS INTO THE MOLTEN BATH SO AS TO PENETRATE THE METAL LAYER.(FIG. 2)

    Abstract: Convertidor que produce metal a partir de un material bruto metalífero, mediante un procedimiento de fusión directa, conteniendo dicho convertidor un baño fundido que presenta una capa de metal y una capa de escoria y una zona de transición formada por salpicaduras, ascendentes y a continuación descendentes, pequeñas gotas y chorros de material fundido en el espacio continuo de gas sobre la capa de metal y que presenta un espacio continuo de gas por encima de la capa de escoria, comprendiendo dicho convertidor: (a) una solera formada por material refractario que presenta una base y unos lados que están en contacto con el metal fundido; (b) unas paredes laterales que se extienden hacia arriba desde los lados de la solera y que están en contacto con la capa de escoria y con la zona de transición y el espacio continuo de gas, en el que las paredes laterales que están en contacto con el gas comprenden unos paneles refrigerados por agua y una capa de escoria sobre los paneles y las pérdidas caloríficas a través de los paneles refrigerados por agua son inferiores a 150 kW/m2 de superficie de panel expuesto al interior del convertidor en condiciones normales de funcionamiento; (c) una o más lanzas/toberas que se extienden hacia abajo en el interior del convertidor y que inyectan un gas que contiene oxígeno en el convertidor por encima de la capa de metal; (d) una pluralidad de lanzas/toberas que inyectan por lo menos parte del material bruto metalífero y un material carbonoso con un gas portador en el baño fundido de manera que penetran en la capa de metal; y (e) unos medios para la colada del metal fundido y de la escoria del convertidor.
