Abstract: This invention relates to a precursor fiber bundle for production of a carbon fiber bundle, a process for producing the precursor fiber bundle, a carbon fiber bundle produced with the precursor fiber bundle, and a process for producing the carbon fiber bundle. A percursor fiber bundle according to the invention has a fineness being in the range of from 300,000 denier to 1,500,000 denier and has a potential dividability to sub-tows each of which has a fineness being in the range of from 50,000 denier to 250,000 denier. The precursor fiber bundle is obtained by dividing a multifilament made of an acrylic copolymer spun from a spinnerette into a plurality of sub-tows, drawing the sub-tows in this state, and after that converging the sub-tows into one tow with overlapping adjacent sub-tows at a side edge portion thereof. The converging is practiced typically by passing the overlapped sub-tows through a crimping apparatus. A carbon fiber bundle according to the invention is produced by dividing the precursor fiber bundle into the sub-tows and after that treating the sub-tows by passing thereof through stabilizing and carbonizing processes.

Abstract: Provided are a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin composition a molding material a prepreg and methods for producing same which offer excellent interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and thermoplastic resin and offer excellent mechanical properties. The carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin composition comprising the following components (A) and (B) carbon fiber and a thermoplastic resin. Component (A): (A1) a bifunctional or higher epoxy compound and/or (A2) an epoxy compound which has a monofunctional or higher epoxy group and has one or more functional group(s) selected from among a hydroxyl group an amide group an imide group a urethane group a urea group a sulfonyl group and a sulfo group. Component (B): 0.1 to 25 mass parts of at least one type of reaction accelerant selected from the group consisting of (B1) a specific tertiary amine compound (salt) [a] (B2) a specific quaternary ammonium salt [b] and (B3) a phosphine compound and/or quaternary ammonium salt [c] with respect to 100 mass parts of the component (A).

Abstract: A carbon fiber molding material is provided that exhibits excellent interfacial adhesion between the carbon fibers and a thermosetting resin, and that yields a molded product exhibiting excellent mechanical properties. The carbon fiber molding material is either (Z) a prepreg containing sizing agent-coated carbon fibers and a thermosetting resin, or (Y) a material for forming woven fabric or braided cords that employs sizing agent-coated carbon fibers. The sizing agent is characterized by containing the following components (A) and (B): component (A) is an epoxy compound having two or more epoxy groups, or two or more functional groups; component (B) is a compound containing one or more of the group consisting of a tertiary amine compound, a tertiary amine salt, a quaternary ammonium salt, a quaternary phosphonium salt, and a phosphine compound. The sizing agent is obtained by blending 0.1-25 parts by mass of the compound (B) with 100 parts by mass of the compound (A).

Abstract: The precursor fiber bundle for manufacture of carbon fibers of the present invention is one fiber bundle in which a plurality of precursor fiber bundles for manufacture of carbon fibers, respectively consisting of 30,000 or more filaments are joined at their respective mating ends directly or through an intervening fiber bundle (for example, a stabilized fiber bundle) not generating heat at the stabilizing treatment temperature, and at the respective joining portions, the filaments of the respective adjacent fiber bundles are individually entangled with each other. The individual filaments are entangled with each other by treating the overlaid portions of flatly opened terminal and starring ends of fiber bundles by a jet fluid or needle punch. The one continuous carbon fiber bundle for manufacture of carbon fibers, though thick, has heat reserved less at the joining portions in the stabilizing treatment.
