Abstract:
Hydrogen is used as the fuel source in a gas turbine combined cycle power plant. The hydrogen may be combusted in either a mixture of compressed air and steam or a mixture of pure oxygen and steam. In either case, the work of compression associated with pressurizing the oxidant for the combustion process is considerably reduced since steam, rather than excess air, is used to moderate combustion temperature, as well as to cool the turbine components. The steam is produced by transferring heat from the turbine exhaust gas to feed water. Since no hydrocarbon fuel is used, fuel bond NOx is eliminated. Moreover, if pure oxygen is used, rather than air, for the combustion of the hydrogen, then the only emission from the power plant is water vapor, which may be condensed and returned to the cycle.
Abstract:
An I.D. pipe clamp used for holding the ends of two pipes during welding, and having a means for inspecting the inside diameter of the root pass of the weld without removal of the pipe clamp or breaking of the purge gas seal. The pipe clamp has a frame with two clamping mechanisms for locking the clamp in position within the pipe ends. A means for inspecting, such as a video camera or other nondestructive testing device, is mounted on the pipe clamp between the two clamping mechanisms. Gas purge dams are located proximate each clamping mechanism to facilitate the creation of an inert gas purge in the region of the weld joint. The means for inspecting is operated to inspect the root pass of the weld prior to breaking the gas purge and prior to removal of the pipe clamp. The pipe clamp may also support a means for dressing of the weld I.D., such as a brush or a grinding tool, along with a vacuum line for removal of debris created during operation of the means for dressing.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the partial or complete continuous separation of isotopes of gadolinium, especially high thermal neutron capture cross section gadolinium isotopes, using continuous, steady-state, chromatography in which an ion exchange resin is the stationary phase, an aqueous solution of ions based on a mixture of gadolinium isotopes is the feed phase, and an aqueous acid eluant solution is the mobile phase. The method involves the mobile phase eluting or desorbing the gadolinium isotopic solute or ligand adsorbed on the stationary phase under conditions such that each of the various naturally occurring isotopes of gadolinium is primarily eluted in an elution volume distinct from the elution volumes of the other isotopes. In a preferred embodiment, the conditions are such that at least one of the elution volumes contains essentially only one isotope of gadolinium. The method is preferably conducted in a continuous, steady-state manner, and it is preferably conducted in a single operation in a continuous annular chromatograph (CAC).
Abstract:
An electric vehicle voltage converter (38) for a vehicle having a battery (40) supplying a battery voltage at a pair of terminals and a method for converting power from an electric vehicle propulsion system battery from a first voltage to a lower second voltage at a rate up to a maximum rated current. The converter (38) and the method operate by alternatingly supplying current from the battery (40) at the first voltage in first and second directions through a series connection of a transformer primary winding (84) and a capacitor (80), simultaneously drawing the maximum rated current at the second voltage from a secondary winding (86) of the transformer (82), and substantially fully charging the capacitor (80) when current is supplied through the primary winding in the first direction and substantially fully discharging the capacitor (80) when current is supplied through the primary winding in the second direction.
Abstract:
A method for testing a power bridge for an electric vehicle propulsion system, the power bridge including a switching circuit having first and second switching elements operable between "on" and "off" states. The method comprises the steps of selectively switching the first and second switching elements between the "on" and "off" states, monitoring the first and second switching elements to determine whether the first and second switching elements operate between the "on" and "off" states when selectively switched, and indicating a failure of the switching circuit when at least one of the first and second switching elements does not operate between the "on" and "off" states when selectively switched.

Abstract:
Apparatus and method for producing real time indications of corrosion in high temperature processes utilizing a sensor having a plurality of electrodes spaced apart by high temperature insulators utilizing electrochemical noise indications from two parallel circuits having a common electrode and leg in each parallel portion of the circuit, the noise indications from the circuit being utilized to provide real time indication of corrosion and cooperating with signals indicative of operating parameters or the addition of corrosion inhibitors to maintain the corrosion rate within boundaries defined by the corrosion resistance of the materials used and thereby reduce the real time corrosion degradation while maintaining acceptable operating parameters.
Abstract:
A transport/stacker module provides for a vertical stacking of mail bins. Carriers traveling in a transport path have openable and closable doors at both ends, and a frame of the transport/stacker module is provided with cam actuators to open the doors after the carriers pass turnaround areas and close the doors before the carriers enter the turnaround areas. A rake mechanism disposed above each bin is provided with a snubber which engages a mail piece prior to rake tines of the rake mechanism.
Abstract:
A modular mail processing method and control system that includes a plurality of induction transport modules and a stacker/transport module. The system maintains a real time statistics concerning the mail flowing through the system. The modularity of the system increases its flexibility in adapting to sorting either incoming or outgoing mail. In addition, a variety of readers and printers can be employed in the system to meet the needs of a particular customer.
Abstract:
An in-series load bearing sensor (140) is provided for use with a motor operated valve assembly (200). The in-series load bearing sensor (140) is installed in the mechanical load path between the actuator (100) and valve yoke (130) to provide a direct measurement of valve stem (110) thrust and/or actuator (100) output torque under actual operating conditions. Sensor (140) is precalibrated and can be installed temporarily for testing purposes or permanently for ongoing monitoring of valve performance. Shear webs (40) connect inner (30) and outer (20) rings, wherein strain (43) and torque (42) gauges are positioned on the webs (40).
