Abstract: A compound motor-generator system including a first motor-generator and a second motor-generator. The first motor generator includes a stator having a set of three-phase field windings and a first rotor disposed inside and coaxial with the stator and configured to rotate relative to the stator. The second motor-generator includes a rotational stator and a second rotor coupled to a common shaft with the rotor of the first motor-generator and disposed inside and coaxial to the rotational stator. The rotational stator is configured to rotate relative to the second rotor and at a higher rotational speed than the second rotor.

Abstract: While motors or generators stacked in series may allow for higher operating voltages, such motors or generators may also exhibit instability. To minimize instability, the motors or generators may be controlled to have an approximately equal current. An example motor system may include motor stacks connected in series, each motor stack exhibiting a respective stack voltage and a respective differential power (based on a difference in power between motors in the motor stack). A control system may average the stack voltages to generate an average stack voltage and generate a nominal stack power corresponding to each stack voltage. The control system may receive the differential powers, combine each differential power and nominal stack power for the respective motor stack to generate first and a second motor powers, and control each motor stack using the first and second motor powers.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for simulation of electrical power grid behaviors. In some instances, a data model associated with an electrical power grid is obtained. The data model stores static data and dynamic data that can be continuously integrated into the data model based on data streams obtained from data sources associated with properties of the electrical power grid. A set of interfaces can be instantiated for querying data based on the data model. The querying is related to data from at least one of a planning analysis modeling domain or an operation analysis modeling domain from the data model related to the electrical power grid. A query associated with a first planning operation in the planning analysis modeling domain is executed. The query defines one or more nodes of the electrical power grid and relates to the planning analysis domain.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method executed by one or more processors includes receiving interconnection data for a proposed interconnection to a power grid; accessing a power grid model including a topological representation of the power grid, electrical specifications of grid components, and empirical operation characteristics; and generating, using the interconnection data for the proposed interconnection to the power grid, and the power grid model, simulated power grid data. The simulated power grid data is based on simulating operation of the power grid with the proposed interconnection coupled to a location of the power grid identified by the interconnection data during a simulated time period. The simulated power grid data includes a plurality of different temporal and spatially dependent characteristics of the power grid. The method includes evaluating, using one or more metrics, the simulated power grid data; and outputting evaluation results of the one or more metrics.

Abstract: This disclosure describes a system and method for enabling an inverter to temporarily sustain fault current. One implementation is a system that includes an inverter having a plurality of transistors. A reservoir having an outlet channel is configured to contain a compressed gas. The outlet channel is arranged to direct the compressed gas towards a heatsink in thermal communication with one or more of the plurality of transistors. A control valve can be positioned between the reservoir and the outlet channel and a controller can be configured to detect an overcurrent event in the inverter and, in response, open the control valve. A transformer is electrically connected to an output of the inverter and configured to step down voltage from the inverter to a circuit being supplied by the inverter.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a storage device, for determining whether a distributed energy resource is connected at a location. Electrical load data is obtained for a location over a time period. The electrical load data is analyzed to determine one or more signals from the electrical load data. The signals are compared to one or more load profiles for the location. Each load profile can indicate one or more baseline electrical patterns for the location. A likelihood that at least one distributed energy resource is in use at the location is determined based on the comparison. In response to determining that the likelihood is more than a threshold, one or more actions are performed.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for performing an electric grid time synchronization process. The process can include: receiving, from a GPS transceiver of a first device coupled to an electric power grid, data including a GPS time reference; formatting the GPS time reference into a data packet, where the data packet has a particular format compatible with power line communication; and broadcasting, by the first device and using power line communications, the data packet to a plurality of electric grid components.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs stored on a computer-readable storage medium, for obtaining, from an electric field sensor, measurements of a net electric field resulting from a combination of respective electric fields from two or more electrical power conductors that are proximate to the electric field sensor. The apparatus detects a change in successive measurements of the net electric field. The apparatus determines, based on the change, that an electrical fault has occurred in one of the two or more electric power conductors. The apparatus sends to a server system, data indicating that the electrical fault has occurred in one of the two or more electric power conductors.
