Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus useful for printing and a method of controlling the temperature of a medium in the apparatus useful for printing that achieves the efficiency of energy and consistent operation.
SOLUTION: The apparatus useful for printing includes a fuser roll 202 including a first outer surface; an external roll 214 including an outer surface 215; a pressure roll 204 including an outer surface 209; a temperature sensor 260 for sensing the temperature of the outer surface 209; a belt 230 supported on the fuser roll 202 and the external roll 214; a nip 210 between the outer surface 209 and the outer surface of the belt 230 at which the belt 230 heats the medium 228; and a positioning device 217 coupled to the external roll 214. The positioning device 217 is operable to move the external roll 214 relative to the outer surface of the belt 230 to change a wrap length of the belt 230 on the outer surface 215, based on the temperature of the outer surface 209, to maintain a substantially constant temperature at an interface between the surface of the belt 230 and marking material.

SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a print head protector 50 surrounding the print head, and has a first slot 60, a second slot 62 surrounding the first slot 60 and wider than the first slot. A positive pressure air supply source is connected to a suction port 64 communicating with the first slot, and an outlet 66 communicating with the second slot is connected to a negative pressure source. Air from the suction port 64 flows externally as if to separate from the print head through the first slot 60, eliminates fibers and fine particles (debris) from paper approaching the print head. The debris is captured by a negative pressure near to the second slot 62 and is removed from a printer through the outlet 66.
