    Abstract: Methods form a multi-color electrophoretic display. The methods include providing microcapsules, wherein the microcapsules have an electrostatic charge, and wherein the microcapsules comprise, a shell that is transparent and a displa y medium within the shell, wherein the display medium is comprised of either (a) at least two sets of differently colored particles in a substantially clear fluid, or (b) at least one set of colored particles in a differently colored fluid. The methods include transferring the microcapsules to a substrate, wherein the electrostatic charge of the microcapsules attracts the microcapsules to the substrate, wherein a display layer of microcapsules is formed on the substrate. The methods include positioning a conductive substrate adjacent to the substrate, wherein the substrate is located between the display layer and the conductive substrate. In use, the conductive substrate applies an electric field to the display layer, and wherein the sets of particles within each microcapsule in the display layer are movable within the microcapsule by the electric field.

    Abstract: An electrophoretic ink includes fluid having either (a) at least two sets of differently colored particles with the fluid been a substantially clear flui d, or (b) at least one set of colored particles with the fluid been a differently colored fluid than the colored particles, wherein at least one set of colored particles includes at least one electrophoretic particle having a core-shell structure. The at least one electrophoretic particle includes a shell and a core located within the shell, wherein the- core includes a colorant and a fluorescent compound. An electric field may be applied adjacently to the fluid of the ink, and the at least one set of colored particles having t he core-shell structure is movable within the fluid of the ink by the electric field.

    Abstract: An electrophoretic display device includes a multiplicity of individual reservoirs containing a display medium between conductive substrates, at lea st one of which is transparent, wherein the display medium includes one or more set of colored particles in a dielectric fluid and has an electrical conductivity of about 10 -11 to about -15 S/m, and wherein the multiplicity of individual reservoirs are defined b y a unitary grid whose walls segregate the reservoirs. The gird may be formed vi a photolithography or from a master stamp derived from a mold of the grid pattern.

    Abstract: A method of displaying an image in an electrophoretic display device include s charging each of the sets of differently colored particles to have a differe nt charge through application of an electric field to the display fluid or the device, and then applying an electric field to selected ones of the multiplicity of reservoir s to effect movement of one or more of the differently colored sets of particles in the display fluid therein to display a desired color derived from among the sets of differently colored particles. The colors are shown by way of the particle set or sets moved to be closest to the viewing side conductive substrate of the device. The device m ay include at least one display layer, including a multiplicity of individual reservoirs containing a display fluid, between conductive substrates, at least one of which is transparent and thus may be a viewing side substrate, wherein the display fluid includes at least two sets of particles in a liquid medium, the at least two sets of particles exhibiting a different color.

    Abstract: An electrophoretic display device includes a display layer comprised of a binder having a multiplicity of individual cavities therein that contain a display medium, and conductive substrates, at least one of the conductive substrates being transparent, wherein the display layer is located in between the conductive substrates, and wherein the display medium comprises one or more set of colored particle s in a dielectric fluid and has an electrical conductivity of about 10 -11 to about 10 -15 S/m. The display device may be made by forming composite particles comprised of a sacrificial binder and the one or more set of particles of the display mediu m; mixing the composite particles with the binder to form a mixture; forming a layer from the mixture; removing the sacrificial binder from the composite particles in the layer to form cavities in the layer that contain the one or more set of colored particles; and filling the cavities with the dielectric fluid.

The liquid crystal composition is switchable between a focal-conic state and a planar state in the presence of an electric field and is stable in the respective state when the electric field is removed.

    Abstract: An image forming method composed of: (a) providing a reimageable medium composed of a substrate and a photochromic material, wherein the medium is capable of exhibiting a color contrast and an absence of the color contrast; (b) exposing the medium to an imaging light corresponding to a predetermined image to result in an exposed region and a non-exposed region, wherein the color contrast is present between the exposed region and the non-exposed region to allow a temporary image corresponding to the predetermined image to be visible for a visible time; (c) subjecting the temporary image to an indoor ambient condition for an image erasing time to change the color contrast to the absence of the color contrast to erase the temporary image without using an image erasure device; and (d) optionally repeating procedures (b) and (c) a number of times to result in the medium undergoing a number of additional cycles of temporary image formation and temporary image erasure.
