Abstract:
A process for the preparation of branched thermoplastic resins comprising: heating a mixture of a free radical initiator, at least one first free radical reactive monomer, at least one free radical reactive branching agent compound, and at least one stable free radical agent, to produce a linear or unbranched polymer product with a free radical initator fragment at one end and a covalently bonded stable free radical agent at the other end of the polymerized chain of monomers; and irradiating the unbranched polymer product in the presence of a reactive compound selected from the group consisting of a free radical reactive monomer, a branching agent compound, and mixtures thereof to form a branched polymeric product.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a free radical polymerization process for the preparation of a thermoplastic resin or resins comprising heating a mixture of a free radical initiator, a stable free radical agent, and at least one polymerizable monomer compound to form a thermoplastic resin or resins with a high monomer to polymer conversion; cooling said mixture; optionally isolating the thermoplastic resin or resins; and optionally washing and drying thermoplastic resin or resins. Related free radical processes are also disclosed for the preparation of mixtures and block copolymer thermoplastic resins. Resins prepared by the disclosed processes possess a narrow polydispersity and a modality that is controlled by the selection of a free radical initiator and stable free radical agent addition step or steps. The figure is a plot of percent conversion versus molecular weight of a polystyrene homopolymer product obtained from a bulk or solventless stable free radical agent moderated polymerization of styrene at 130 degrees centigrade.

Abstract:
A reusable image forming medium, including a substrate; an imaging layer coated on or impregnated into the substrate, wherein an irradiation of the imaging layer produces an image; and a signature material coated on or impregnated into the substrate or the imaging layer, the signature material being detectable by a sensor.
Abstract:
A method of displaying an image in an electrophoretic display device includes charging each of the sets of differently colored particles to have a different charge through application of an electric field to the display fluid or the device, and then applying an electric field to selected ones of the multiplicity of reservoirs to effect movement of one or more of the differently colored sets of particles in the display fluid therein to display a desired color derived from among the sets of differently colored particles. The device may include at least one display layer, including a multiplicity of individual reservoirs containing a display fluid, between conductive substrates, at least one of which is transparent and thus may be a viewing side substrate, wherein the display fluid includes at least two sets of particles in a liquid medium, the at least two sets of particles exhibiting a different color.
Abstract:
An electrophoretic display device includes a display layer of a multiplicity of individual microcapsules containing a display medium therein and conductive substrates, at least one of the conductive substrates being transparent, wherein the display layer is located in between the conductive substrates, and wherein the display medium includes one or more set of colored particles in a dielectric fluid and has an electrical conductivity of about 10 -11 to about 10 -15 S/m. The microcapsules may be made by encapsulating the display medium in the wall forming material of the microcapsule, and for example a complex coacervation process may be used.

Abstract:
A document includes paper having an average surface roughness of at least about 0.5 microns and including one or more optical brighteners, and includes at least one image thereon wherein the at least one image includes clear binder and light absorbing material that absorbs light only at wavelengths below 350 nm. The image is substantially not detectable to a naked human eye through differential gloss or exposure to light having wavelengths of 365 nm or more, but may be revealed to the naked human eye by exposing the document to light having a wavelength at which the light absorbing material absorbs light.
