    Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring the performance of a cleaner brush used to clean a photoreceptive surface. The apparatus and method include developing a toner patch of known first length on the imaging surface and then removing that toner patch from the imaging surface using a cleaner brush that accumulates a toner patch of a second length on the surface of the brush. The comparison of the toner patch on the imaging surface versus the toner patch on the brush surface monitor the cleaning efficiency of the cleaner brush.

    Abstract: The contact zone width measurement is performed by developing a toner image on the surface, the image having sufficient width to overlap a cleaner brush and then moving the image into direct alignment with the brush. The movement of the surface is stopped and the brush is rotated against the surface to remove the toner image from the surface in the contact zone. The toner image is moved out of direct alignment with the brush by retracting the brush away from contact with the surface, and restarting movement of the surface to move the brush out of direct alignment with the brush. A width of the contact zone is then measured automatically by determining an amount of time required for two edges of the contact zone on the imaging surface to pass under a sensing device, the two edges having a lead edge and a trail edge separated by the width of the contact zone away from one another. The measurement of the width of the contact zone is converted for diagnostic analysis and process control.

    Abstract: An apparatus which cleans a moving imaging surface (10) with a cleaning blade (101) and automatically detects a failure of the cleaning blade. A failure sensing mechanism (170,180) detects the cleaning blade failure and activates a blade indexing mechanism (140). The indexing mechanism removes the failed cleaning blade (101) and positions a new cleaning blade in a wiping or doctoring mode frictional contact with the imaging surface for cleaning. A brush (110) positioned upstream of the cleaning blade, in the direction of movement of the imaging surface, disturbs the particles thereon.
