    Abstract: PORTABLE SPECTROPHOTOMETER A portable spectrophotometer includes a small-diameter optical sphere (101) as well as optical detectors (131, 136) and signal processing and display circuitry (140, 142) which allows the instrument to be taken to an object to be measured and which provides a readout of color values at the portable instrument. The instrument is capable of providing specular-included and specular-excluded color readings simultaneously. The interior of the integrating sphere is coated with a highly reflective, colorabsorbing material, and light from an incandescent lamp (103) is diffused within the sphere prior to reaching the object to be measured. The sphere is provided with a first aperture (120) which receives spectrally-included light and which is positioned to absorb a spectral component of the diffused source light. A second aperture (125) positioned at a corresponding angular position with respect to the object measures specular-excluded light, excluding the specular component absorbed by the first aperture. By appropriately combining the specular-included and specular-excluded light at one wavelength, a value for the specular component is derived.

According to the invention, the entrance slit (3) is mounted so as to be displaceable along the Rowland circle (1), on either side of a central position, the optical transmission system comprises a first, fixed part (I) associated with the light source (5; 8) and a second, movable part (II) associated with the entrance slit (3) and mounted so as to be displaceable parallel to itself in a direction (a1, a2; b1, b2; c1, c2) parallel to the tangent (T) to the Rowland circle (1) at the central position of the entrance slit (3), and the device comprises means for controlling the displacement, in synchronism, of the entrance slit (3) along the Rowland circle (1) and of the movable part (II), parallel to the tangent (T), with maintenance of the direction of the optical axis of the assembly.

    Abstract: In a device for decomposing optical radiation, which is provided with a light entry opening, means for projecting the entry opening into a light exit plane and interposed dispersive components, a polarisation prism with a divided field of view is placed directly downstream of the light entry opening. As a result, two mutually shifted identical spectra, to which different polarisation states of a radiation to be analysed are assigned are generated in the light exit plane. The device can be used advantageously in a Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometer.

    Abstract: The optical arrangement is for the generation of successive measurement beams of different wavelength from the beam from a polychromatic source (1) is applicable to testing absorption and emission. A large number of wavelengths can be rapidly provided within a given spectral range. This is for example the visible and ultraviolet or the rear infrared range, and the entire range can be repeated five times per second. A masking device (5) can be placed at the light input or output of a spectral separator (3). If the mask is at the input point only one gap (6a-6e) is illuminated at any time and only one monochromatic measurement beam is produced. If the mask is at the output point different monochromatic beams pass to the gaps and are selected by a successive gap opening and closing mechanism.

    Abstract: An arrangement of the Rowland character includes a support and a concave grating on the support for producing the spectrum characteristic of a sample being investigated. The support has a series of slits thereon which are positioned on the Rowland circle and are adjusted to the spectral lines of samples to be investigated. An element on the support is provided with a primary slit for directing the radiation derived from a sample being investigated onto the concave grating. The primary slit is positioned on the Rowland circle and the element provided with the primary slit is mounted on the support for movement along the arc of the Rowland circle. The element is mounted in such a manner as to be arrestable in a plurality of positions. The element is favorably in the form of a plate. A preferred embodiment contemplates the provision of a pair of grooves in the support, which latter may be in the form of a housing, with the grooves following the curvature of the Rowland circle and the element being guided in the grooves. The edges of the element located in the grooves may be provided with openings in which there are accommodated spherical members as well as biasing elements for urging the spherical members into contact with the grooves.
