Abstract:
A forging compound particularly adapted for hot die dwell forging of titanium and its alloys comprises boundary layer particles (boron nitride or graphite) and a major quantity (more than 60% by weight) of vitreous components. The vitreous components comprise diboron trioxide and silica frit containing a metal oxide wetting agent. In a preferred form, the forging lubricant comprises about 14 to 25% by weight boron nitride particles, balance, vitreous components. The latter comprise about 60% to 75% by weight diboron trioxide, balance silica glass containing cobalt oxide wetting agent in an amount of 1.0 to 3% by weight of the vitreous components. All the foregoing ingredients may be dispersed in a coatable carrier preferably comprising a solvent, e.g., xylene, in which a resin binder is dissolved. A method of using the lubricant includes coating workpieces with the lubricant, heating the workpieces to forging temperature, and imposing forging pressure on the workpiece within an enclosed die for a dwell period to creep-flow the workpiece metal into conformity with the forging die.

A composition and method of preparation are herein described for molten release and parting compositions adaptable for use in glass-forming operations. The novel composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of a mixture of a solid lubricant, a water-soluble silicate binder, a setting agent, and a water-soluble phosphate. A preferred composition comprises a mixture of flake graphite, boron nitride, sodium silicate, zinc oxide and potassium phosphate tribasic.

The novel composition comprises a dispersion of a mixture of a solid lubricant, such as graphite or carbon, a carrier, a binder, and a s-triazinyl derivative. Composition for forming lubricant coating, particularly useful in processes for working of sheet metals, comprising a resin capable of forming a layer adhering to the surface, and an oil for forming an upper layer to enhance the lubricating properties on top of and/or partially distributed within the resin layer; and a method of applying both layers of the coating to the metal surface simultaneously from a single aqueous dispersion or emulsion composition. The coating has been found to greatly increase the ability of the metal sheet to withstand severe fabrication processes, such as deep-drawing, without tearing or galling, compared with ordinary lubricating oils or greases.

A composition for producing an antifriction structural material comprising a carborane-containing polymer binder and an inorganic heat resistant solid lubricant. The binder is a polyester, a polyamide, a polyimide, or a polyoxadiazole containing carborane units attached to the polymer chain thereof. A process for producing said antifriction structural material from said composition comprising subjecting the composition to compression moulding at temperatures of up to 400*C, followed by coking at temperatures ranging from 400* to 900*C. The antifriction material according to the present invention is intended for operation in dry-friction units within a wide temperature range.
