Abstract: Process for the preparation of oil-soluble copolymers characterized by the operations of first polymerizing, under the influence of a free radical initiator, a monoethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer or a mixture of such monomers, with at least one of said monomers being an ester which has the formula ** (See formula) ** wherein n is an integer having the value of 1 or 2, and R is an alkyl group of 12 to 24 carbon atoms, until approximately 50 to 90 percent of it has formed polymer, and then add to this mixture comprising polymer and monomer between about 20 and about 45 percent of the weight of the total monomers used, at least one ester having the formula CH2 = CHCOOR1 (II) wherein R1 is an alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms, and continuing polymerization of the resulting mixture until the yield of the total copolymer is at least 75 percent. Abstract: PURPOSE:To form large uniform particles of a rolling oil and facilitate rolling operation and disposal of waste oil, by adding a specified water-sol. macromolecular compd. to a rolling oil emulsion supplied by an indirect method in which the rolling oil is dispersed in cooling water for spraying. CONSTITUTION:A water-sol. macromolecular compd. is added in an amt. of about 0.1-20wt% to rolling oil and/or cooling water to form a rolling oil emulsion. The macromolecular compd. is a cationic or amphoteric compd. contg. a cationic or basic nitrogen atom in the molecule (e.g. phosphate of diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) or an anionic compd. contg. a carboxyl or sulfonic acid group in the molecule (e.g. copolymer of olefin with maleic acid).

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a metal working oil compsn. contg. a lubricating oil component, a specified water-sol. macromolecular compd., an extreme-pressure agent and a surfactant, which is useful in high speed and high-pressure rolling and has circulation stability, etc for easier process control. CONSTITUTION:The metal working oil compsn. contains as essential ingredients (A) a lubricating oil component selected from among oil, fat, mineral oil and fatty acid ester, (B) a water-sol. macromolecular compd. selected from among (a) cationic or amphoteric addition polymer, ring-opened polymer, polycondensate and natural macromolecular deriv. (salt) having an MW of 1,000-10,000,000 and contg. nitrogen atom(s) in the molecule and (b) olefin/maleic acid copolymer, (meth)acrylic acid/maleic acid copolymer salt and (meth)acrylic acid homopolymer having an MW of 250-100,000 or salts of these copolymers, (C) an extreme- pressure agent and (D) a surfactant. The compsn. gives stable and uniform particle size distribution under agitation, has high lubricating performance, undergoes little changes with time and shows minimized incorporation of soiled oil and foreign substances.

Abstract: A lubricating oil has dissolved therein a dispersing agent comprising a graft polymer, prepared in the presence of a free radical catalyst, of (1) a preformed oil-soluble homo- or copolymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid esters, and (2) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a tertiary nitrogen atom, the graft polymer containing 2 to 30% by weight, based on the weight of polymer (1), of the monomer (2). In examples (1) is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid esters of fatty alcohols and (2) is N-vinyl pyrrolidone.ALSO:A preformed oil-soluble homo- or copolymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid esters is subjected to graft polymerization with an ethylenically-unsaturated monomer containing a tertiary nitrogen atom in the presence of a free-radical catalyst, whereby a graft polymer is formed containing 2 to 30% (based on the weight of preformed polymer) of the said monomer. The preformed polymer may be prepared in bulk or emulsion, followed by dispersion in the N-containing monomer, or prepared in solution e.g. in oil and said monomer added thereto. Specified base polymers are homopolymers of acrylic and methacrylic acid esters of alcohols containing at least 8 carbon atoms and copolymers of these monomers with esters of fumaric or itaconic acid and alcohols containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, with vinyl acetate, or with compounds of which the homopolymers are oil-insoluble e.g. acrylic and methacrylic acid esters of alcohols with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or with aminoalkyl esters e.g. dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate, di-n-butylaminoethyl acrylate, dimethylaminobutyl acrylate and n-butylaminoethyl methacrylate. The tertiary nitrogen-containing monomer is e.g. an N-vinyl lactam such as N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-vinyl-caprolactam, N - vinyl - 3 - methyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl - 5 - piperidone and N - vinyl - 4 - n-butyl caprolactam or the corresponding thiolactams. Cyclic N-vinyl imides e.g. N-vinyl succinimide, N-vinyl-a -methyl succinimide and N-vinyl phthalimide may be used as can N-vinyl oxazolidones and N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides e.g. N-vinyl-N-ethylacetamide and N-vinyl-N-methyl benzamide. The free radical catalyst is e.g. azodiisobutyronitrile, tertiary butyl perbenzoate or tertiary butyl hydroperoxide. The aminoalkyl esters specified above may be grafted on to the preformed polymer along with the tertiary nitrogen containing monomer. In the examples, the monomer used is N-vinyl pyrrolidone, together with N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate in Example 3. The base polymer is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and a mixture of methacrylic acid esters of fatty alcohols and the catalyst is tertiary butyl perbenzoate.
