    Abstract: A pair of optical beams of radiant energy from separate paths in a spectrophotometer are coaxially merged into a single composite beam with an optical member which resembles a coarse echelette grating. A reflective surface which includes the surfaces of sidewalls within a plurality of parallel grooves is disposed on the optical member. The grooves are arranged in a lateral array and are generally V-shaped cross-sectionally. The beams to be combined are directed upon the sidewalls and the composite beam is emitted therefrom in accordance with the law of reflection. When the beams to be combined include non-collimated rays, shadowing is provided by the portion of the optical member between adjoining sidewalls of adjacent grooves to reduce flare. Furthermore, image abberations as caused by off-axis operation due to use of a spherical mirror in the beam combining arrangement, are substantially corrected by the optical member.

    Abstract: A spectrophotometer includes a wide band radiant energy source and a detector for providing an output signal proportional to the intensity of the radiant energy received thereby. A light pipe system is divided into a reference path and a sample path. Such system coacts with a rotary assembly having a variable monochromatic filter located diametrically opposite to an opening through which radiant energy can freely pass. The remaining portions of the rotary assembly are opaque so that as the assembly turns, the sample and reference paths are serially energized by monochromatic energy and then by polychromatic energy. The sample path includes a sample illumination and collection system for illuminating a test sample and collecting the light reflected therefrom. The resultant output of the detector can be analyzed to determine the amount of fluorescence.

    Abstract: 1413417 Optical apparatus LKB-PRODUKTER AB 16 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 12900/73 Heading G2J Apparatus for periodically displacing a light beam from a first path to a second path comprises a rotatable annular member having an axial bore whose end surfaces are provided with diametrically opposed reflecting surfaces. As the annular member passes through a certain angular position, light travelling along the first path is reflected at both reflecting surfaces and emerges along the second path. As shown in Fig. 2 the annular member comprises four sectors 9A-D; two opposite sectors 9A, 9C have reflecting surfaces, one sector 9D transmits light and the fourth sector 9B does not transmit light. An application of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Light from sources 1, 2 passes through filters 3, 4 which transmit only wavelengths # 1 , # 2 respectively. The filtered light passes through slits 11, 12 and impinges on the apparatus 9 which directs light from each source alternately through two absorption flow cells 5, 6 to a photo-detector e.g. photo-multiplier 7. If the apparatus 9 is rotated clockwise as viewed from the left the sequence is: (a) # 1 is blocked; # 2 is doubly-reflected through cell 5 ; (b) # 1 is blocked; # 2 is transmitted through cell 6; (c) # 1 is doubly reflected through cell 6; # 2 is blocked and (d) # 1 is transmitted through cell 5; # 2 is blocked. The sector 9D which transmits light may be provided with a filter which absorbs as much light as the two reflecting surfaces.
