Abstract:
A system for forming a surface configuration, such as a neck and a flange, on a can body adjacent an open end thereof using a mandrel having an outer surface comprising generally cylindrical portions on each side of an annular recess which recess has a surface configuration corresponding to the neck and the flange to be formed. A resilient deformable object is located around the mandrel. A portion of a can body is placed between the mandrel and the resilient, deformable object which is then deformed so as to move a portion of the can body into conformation with the surface of the annular recess. At the same time, a force is applied to a portion of the portion of the can body being deformed to resist the movement thereof so that the portion of the can body in which the neck and flange is being formed is stretched and thinned as it is moved into conformation with the surface of the annular recess.

@ A clip (10) is capable of securely holding cans to form a multiple can package and allowing ease of disengagement and relative bending of adjacent cans in directions parallel to the multiple container package. The clip (10) is designed to engage cans having a wide range of counter-sink depths by providing an ear (12) having a guiding portion (14) with sufficient flexibility to conform to the top portion of the can. A hook portion (20) of the clip is designed to securely engage the chime portion of the can while uniform support is provided by a concentric support wall (22), to maintain engagement of the can in a secure manner with increased holding ability. A rib structure extends into the ear portion (12) to provide additional support. Flange means (24) limit movement of discrete body portions of the clip (10) to allow ease in disengagement in response to radial diagonal movement of cans during disengagement.

A milk carton blank (10) formable into a liquid tight parallelepiped shaped milk carton (20). The milk carton blank (10) comprises a generally rectangular shape having a plurality of panel portions (70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 85, 86, 87) formed by a gridwork of longitudinal (32, 34, 36, 38) and transverse (42, 44) fold lines. Cutout portions (91, 92, 93, 94) in oppositely positioned top and bottom panel portions allow the top and bottom panel portions to be folded and sealed with a relatively small number of operations. A perforated tab portion is described which may be removed from a tongue portion of the milk carton to provide a pouring spout. Additional folding lines are described which allow a portion of a top and lateral side panel of the milk carton to be thrust outwardly to facilitate pouring of liquid therefrom.
Abstract:
A laminating apparatus for laminating extensible plastic film material to a paper backing material to form a laminated composite. The apparatus comprises mechanical stretch control means for controlling the stretch or relaxation of the film material prior to lamination with the paper material. The apparatus also comprises means for monitoring the amount of film stretch in the laminated composite and providing data therefrom to a data processing unit which provides control signals to operate the mechanical stretch controlling means.

Apparatus and method for trimming away a portion of the open end of an untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body and a trimmed away portion using a plurality of can trimming apparatuses (32) which are mounted on a turret (34) which is secured to a main drive shaft (10) for rotation therewith. Each of the can trimming apparatus has mechanisms for cutting (50, 68) the untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body (78) and a trimmed away portion (92); for separating the trimmed can body from the trimmed away portion (76) by moving both in one axial direction and then only the trimmed body in the opposite axial direction; for loading untrimmed can bodies onto each can processing apparatus (76) and for unloading trimmed can bodies therefrom and for cutting, knurling and disposing of the trimmed away portions.

Appareil de transformation de flans de boîte en corps de boîtes allongés comprenant une structure de support (4) ayant des premier et second engrenages (50, 58) montés en rotation sur la structure de support et des moyens d'entraînement (36) pour faire tourner les premier et second engrenages de sorte que le second engrenage tourne dans un sens opposé au sens de rotation du premier engrenage. Un ensemble d'emboutissage (24) de reprise et des matrices (22) de presse-repasseuse et de formation de boîte sont situées adjacentes à la structure de support. Un bélier (70) est monté sur la structure de support et effectue un mouvement linéaire alternatif, certaines de ses parties passant par l'ensemble d'emboutissage de reprise et les matrices de presse-repasseuse et de formation de boîte. La connexion du bélier aux premier et second engrenages est telle que la rotation des premier et second engrenages déplacent le bélier selon un mouvement alternatif. Dans un mode de réalisation, le bélier ne tourne pas pendant son mouvement alternatif mais dans un autre mode de réalisation le bélier tourne pendant son mouvement alternatif.

On a mis au point un appareil destiné à chaque unité de remplissage (2) d'une machine de remplissage de boîtes, comprenant un support (44) destiné à maintenir une unité de commande (20) de niveau de liquide à l'intérieur d'un logement (4) de ladite unité de remplissage de boîtes, ainsi qu'un appareil de commande actionné de l'extérieur du logement pour déplacer le support, afin de positionner ladite unité de commande de niveau de liquide à une position correcte pour assurer que chaque boîte est remplie de manière précise.

Un dispositif de commande de la synchronisation de parties répétitives de longueur variable d'une bande en défilement comprend un poste de traitement (98) dans lequel la même opération est exécutée sur chaque partie répétitive de la bande le traversant. Le dispositif comprend des repères d'alignement (11) associés à chaque partie répétitive de la bande (20), positionnés à un endroit essentiellement identique dans chaque partie répétitive (24), de manière à pouvoir être détectés par un capteur d'alignement (120) indiquant la position relative d'une partie répétitive associé. Des détecteurs séparés produisent un signal de détection de repères d'alignement indiquant le passage de la bande, un signal de défilement de la bande indiquant la distance parcourue par la bande, un signal de référence de position de la machine indiquant une position de référence de la machine de traitement se répétant cycliquement et un signal de déplacement de la machine, indiquant le déplacement relatif cyclique de la machine de traitement. Une unité de traitement de données (100) reçoit et traite lesdits signaux, afin d'aligner correctement chaque partie répétitive de la bande.
