Abstract: Apparatus and method for trimming away a portion of the open end of an untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body and a trimmed away portion using a plurality of can trimming apparatuses (32) which are mounted on a turret (34) which is secured to a main drive shaft (10) for rotation therewith. Each of the can trimming apparatus has mechanisms for cutting (50, 68) the untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body (78) and a trimmed away portion (92); for separating the trimmed can body from the trimmed away portion (76) by moving both in one axial direction and then only the trimmed body in the opposite axial direction; for loading untrimmed can bodies onto each can processing apparatus (76) and for unloading trimmed can bodies therefrom and for cutting, knurling and disposing of the trimmed away portions.
