Abstract:
The present invention provides halopolymer-containing multicomponent structures comprising at least one halopolymer layer and at least one adhesive layer. The adhesive layer comprises a base polymer having at least one functional moiety selected from the group consisting of unsaturated acids and anhydrides thereof, amines and epoxy compounds, wherein said adhesive layer has an ASTM D-2240 shore hardness number of less than about 25 in the D scale and less than about 75 in the A scale. Multicomponent structures such as films, tubing, sheet and injection molded and blow molded articles prepared with these adhesives exhibit superior adhesion as well as the excellent barrier properties typically associated with halopolymer-containing multicomponent structures. A method of improving the adhesion of halopolymers is disclosed as well.
Abstract:
A method of increasing the shelf life of a sterilant mixture of ethylene oxide and one or more halocarbons when the mixture is in contact with iron oxide on the surface of a storage vessel. Sufficient carbon dioxide is added to the mixture to reduce the reactivity of the iron oxide for converting ethylene oxide to reaction products of ethylene oxide. In an alternate embodiment, a hollow carbon steel vessel which holds a mixture of ethylene oxide and a halocarbon as a sterilizing gas has its inside surface passivated by forming a reaction product of iron oxide and carbon dioxide.
Abstract:
Non-flammable sterilizing gas compositions of ethylene oxide and a flame suppressant comprising pentafluoroethane and heptafluoropropane are useful in the gaseous sterilization of heat and/or moisture sensitive materials. The sterilizing gas compositions are environmentally acceptable and are more efficient and safer to use than conventional sterilant gas mixtures.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a vapor phase process for the production of difluoromethane, HFC-32. The process of this invention provides for the preparation of HFC-32 by a process that exhibits both good product yield and selectivity.
Abstract:
A method for aerating an ethylene oxide-sterilized article, said method comprising exposing said article to at least one co-adsorbate under conditions such that said co-adsorbate remains vaporized, said co-adsorbate having a partial pressure under said conditions sufficient to displace at least a portion of ethylene oxide adsorbed by said article.
Abstract:
The invention provides multilayered polymethylpentene-containing release films, processes for making the same and for their use in preparing articles comprises cured fiber reinforced epoxy, phenolic or polyacrylate compositions which file use as aerospace structural elements. The films have improved release properties when exposed to high temperatures. The films are non-oriented and multilayered comprising a polyamide layer, a polymethylpentene layer and an adhesive interlayer therebetween. The polyamide layer has a heat stabilizer; and polyamide blend composed of from about 30% to about 80% of a nylon 6 polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 40,000; from about 10% to about 30% of a nylon 6,66 copolymer having a number average molecular weigth of at least about 15,000; and from about 5% to about 40% of a nylon 6,12 copolymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 10,000. The polymethylpentene layer has a heat stabilizer; and at least one polymethylpentene homopolymer, polymethylpentene containing copolymer or a blend thereof. The adhesive interlayer is attached between a surface of the polyamide layer and a surface of the polymethylpentene layer.
Abstract:
The invention provides a process for the production of alpha -methylstyrenes. In particular, the invention provides a process for producing alpha -methylstyrenes from dimethyl phenyl carbinols using an acid salt, which process produces the alpha -methylstyrenes in excellent yield with no significant byproduct formation.
Abstract:
A carbon-carbon composite material is made by providing an open-celled carbon foam preform, and densifying the preform with carbonaceous material. The open-celled carbon foam prefrom may be oxygen stabilized prior to carbonization, and the foam preform densified by CVD, HIP, PIC, VPI, pitch and resin injection, or any combination thereof. The carbon-carbon composite material can be heat treated to provide thermal management materials, structural materials, or a friction material for use in a brake or clutch mechanism.
Abstract:
A pressure balanced turbocharger rotating seal is provided by two piston rings (66, 68) mounted on the shaft (22) of the turbocharger, one of the rings (66, 68) engaging a circumferential surface of the shaft bore in the center housing and the second ring (68) engaging a circumferential surface of the shaft bore (30) in the turbine wheel (25) shroud, with a passage (74) for introducing pressurizing gas intermediate the two rings (66, 68), the passage (74) including a circumferential channel (78) in the inner face of the turbine wheel shroud, and a compression seal (82) engaged between the center housing and turbine wheel shroud outboard of the channel.
