Abstract: This invention provides a much simplified latch including a ratchet that incorporates not only the fishmouth to capture the striker, but also a secondary latching feature such as a hook portion which extends in a secondary position over the fishmouth of the housing and prevents the striker from releasing until such time as the user operates an easily accessible release hand le which may be illuminated.

Abstract: A striker engageable with a latch to retain a moveable closure with respect to a vehicle compartment, said striker comprising a mounting plate having mounting openings for mounting adjacent a compartment opening at a predetermined location or a free end of said moveable closure member at a predetermined location, said mounting plate having recesses or grooves formed therewith for receiving an anchoring a portion of said striker, said striker having a keeper portion for engaging said latch when said moveable closure member is moved to a closed position, said keeper having a first leg and a second leg each having two ends, said first and second legs being joined together by a third portion proximate their distal ends for engaging said latch in use, said first and/or second legs having disposed proximate the other end thereof remote said third portion an anchoring leg extending angularly away (longitudinally, transversely or upwardly) therefore, said either anchoring leg, and/or the portion of said first and second legs adjacent said anchoring leg, being fastened within said mounting plate by welding within compatibly shaped recesses or grooves formed with said mounting plate and being of sufficient depth and diameter to fully accommodate said anchoring leg and the portion of said first and second legs adjacent said anchoring leg, wherein any load applied to said latch and striker tending to separate said striker from said latch, will be resisted by said anchoring leg and the portion of said first and second legs adjacent said anchoring leg welded within said channel of said at least one mounting plate.

Abstract: A vehicle seat integrated to selectively provide an adult seat in an adult seat mode and a child's seat in a child seat mode, the child's seat including a child's seat belt assembly including a pair of shoulder belts extending from the cushioned child's seat back over the shoulders of a child in a sitting position on the cushioned child's seat. Each of the shoulder belts when the child's seat belt assembly is in a restraint condition including a generally straight portion which extends forwardly from a position rearwardly of a support surface provided by the child's seat back through a space in the cushioned child's seat back accommodating the same to a position adjacent the child's shoulder. The child's seat belt assembly is constructed and arranged to automatically accommodate any particular child within a nominal size range between a 20-pound child and a 60-pound child without the straight portions having any appreciable forwardly and upwardly extent even for a 60-pound child or any appreciable ear interference even for a 20-pound child. The child's seat belt assembly is constructed and arranged to accomplish the aforesaid automatic accommodation by restricting the straight portions to extend forwardly from the support surface automatically from progressively lower levels at progressively greater angles to the horizontal as the particular child held in the restraint condition of the child's seat belt assembly is of progressively diminishing size within the range.

Abstract: A remote control system for a vehicle or the like including a flexible Bowden wire assembly having an outer sheath (17) and a wire (18) movably mounted within the sheath so as to expose proximal and distal ends (20,19) extending from proximal and distal ends of the sheath respectively, a first actuator (14) mounted for movement in a first location, a second actuator (16) mounted for movement in a remote second location, the sheath (17) being extended between the first and second locations and having the proximal end thereof fixed in spaced relation to the first actuator (14) and the remote end thereof fixed in spaced relation to the second actuator (16). One of the ends of the Bowden wire (18) is fixed to one of the actuators. The other end of the Bowden wire has an elongated member (23) fixed thereto so as to extend axially therefrom, the elongated member has a series of axially spaced annular grooves (26) formed in the exterior periphery thereof. A sheet metal clip (28) is pivotally carried by the other of the actuators and includes spaced biting edges (46) constructed and arranged to receive a pair of annular grooves (26) of the elongated member (23) to retain the elongated member in a selected position of axial adjustment with respect to the clip (28) and against movement in the direction of extent of the wire (18).

Abstract: A linear drive, particularly useful for locking or unlocking a door lock mechanism or the like permits manual operation by providing an output shaft that can move freely regardless whether the output shaft is in extended or retracted positions without back driving the motor. The output shaft is coaxially slideably situated over a screw which moves a nut that is theadingly engaged therewith and moves inside the output shaft along the axial direction of the screw. The output shaft is not threadingly engaged with the screw. The output shaft thus is freely movable relative to the screw, which results in essentially zero back drive of the screw and the motor. To provide for manual operation, the nut is automatically moved back to its neutral position every tie the output shaft is extended or retracted by a torsion spring or the like which can store energy therein. Whenever the motor is operated to drive the screw, the spring gear is also rotated, which causes the spring to store energy therein. As soon as the motor is turned off, the energy stored in the spring causes the worm gear to rotate in the direction opposite to the last motor driven direction to move the nut to the neutral position it was in prior to energization of the motor.

Abstract: A hydraulic closure system and method is disclosed for a motor vehicle (10) that enables automatic opening and closing, as well as manual closing, of a closure (16) pivotally mounted to an opening frame (14) defining a closure opening in the motor vehicle. The system includes at least one hydraulic actuator assembly (20) attached at opposite ends thereof to the closure (16) and the opening frame (14), respectively. A motorized hydraulic pump (32) inputs energy to the actuator (20) by creating hydraulic fluid flow with respect to the actuator to move the closure (16) from the opened position to the closed position, and a biased energy storage system (140) inputs energy to the actuator (20) to move the closure (16) from the closed position to the opened position. In a preferred embodiment, the pump (32) is activated by manually generated movement of the closure (16) from the opened position toward the closed position for a prescribed distance in more than a prescribed time. Also disclosed is an obstacle detection mechanism (110) which detects obstacles interfering with closing of the closure based on monitored pressure in the system caused by the pump created fluid flow. A level detection (210) and compensation feature adjusts the amount of energy stored in the biased energy storage system (140) for opening the closure (16) based on the detected inclination or declination of the vehicle (10) so that the amount of energy stored is commensurate with the amount required to open the closure (16). An energy monitoring and control system (156) maintains the amount of energy stored in the biased energy storage system (140) for opening the closure (16) within a predetermined range.

Abstract: A vehicle seat (10) comprising a memory carriage assembly (90) having a connector mechanism (100) mounted thereon for movement between first and second positions, and an actuator mechanism (108) mounted thereon for movement between first and second positions. The memory carriage assembly is arranged with respect to the releasable locking assembly (20) and both the manual and seat back actuated releasing mechanisms (50 and 56) of the seat so that (1) when the releasable locking assembly is in locked position thereof the actuator mechanism is in the first position thereof and the connector mechanism is in the first position thereof, (2) when the releasable locking assembly is released by the seat back actuated releasing mechanism, the actuator mechanism is moved from the first position thereof into the second position thereof to enable the connector mechanism to retain the memory carriage assembly in a stationary position while the seat is moved forwardly and returned with the return causing the actuator mechanism to enable the releasable locking assembly to return to its locking position which, in turn, moves the actuator mechanism from the second position thereof into the first position thereof, and (3) when the releasable locking assembly is released by the manually actuated releasing mechanism, the actuator mechanism will be retained in the first position thereof to enable the memory carriage assembly to be moved by the connector mechanism with the seat.
