Abstract: Disclosed is a communication system, and methods for operating the communication system, of a type that includes a satellite communication system segment comprising at least one satellite (10) that projects a plurality of beams (1010) on the surface of the earth. The satellite communication system segment further includes at least one terrestrial satellite gateway (76) that is bidirectionally coupled to the at least one satellite (10) and also to a terrestrial communications system (75). In the communication system one or more beams (1010) from one or more satellites at the surface of the earth define a regional service area (1010) within which at least one Wireless Local Loop (WLL) service region is located. The communication system further includes a terrestrial communication segment comprising at least one WLL base station (1105) capable of bidirectional communications with a plurality of WLL user terminals (1103) within the WLL service region (1101). The terrestrial segment further includes a virtual gateway (1108) that is bidirectionally coupled to the WLL base station (1105) and to the at least one satellite (10). The virtual gateway (1108) is responsive to the terrestrial satellite gateway (76) for temporarily assuming control of satellite system resources for bidirectionally coupling a communication to or from an individual one of the WLL user terminals (1103) into or out of the WLL service region. The virtual gateway (1108) can also transmit at least one of paging and broadcast messages to WLL user terminals (1103). The paging and broadcast messages are first received by the virtual gateway (1108) from the terrestrial satellite gateway (76) via the at least one satellite (10).

Abstract: A method is disclosed for operating a satellite communications system for coupling a user terminal to a data communications network. The method has steps of (a) establishing a connectionless packet data transmission link between the user terminal and a gateway that is coupled to the user terminal through at least one satellite via an inbound link and an outbound link, the gateway being further coupled to the data communications network and being associated with a gateway service provider; (b) deriving billing-related information by counting a number of units of data that comprise data packets that are transmitted over at least one of the inbound link and the outbound link; (c) aggregating the billing-related information with billing-related information for other user terminals; (d) transferring the aggregated billing-related information to a satellite communication system operator site; and (e) at the satellite communication system operator site, determining an amount to bill the gateway service provider based at least in part on the aggregated billing-related information. The step of establishing the connectionless packet data transmission link may include a step of varying a bandwidth of the link to accommodate different data rate requirements.

A method includes steps of measuring a quality of at least one reference signal received by the user terminal, via the satellite; transmitting the measured quality of the reference signal received by the user terminal to the ground station; comparing the measured quality with a predetermined reference; and adjusting a transmit power of the ground station in response to a difference between the predetermined reference and measured quality. The transmit power of the ground station is adjusted so that a flux density of a downlink beam is substantially constant at the user terminal independent of the location of the user terminal in the beam.

Abstract: A communication system (1) includes a satellite communications component having at least one satellite (8) and at least one terrestrial gateway (10), and also a wireless terrestrial communications component (2) having at least one repeater and at least one mobile switching center (4). The at least one gateway (10) and the at least one mobile switching center (4) are coupled together by a first mobile applications part (MAP) network, such as an IS-41 or GSM MAP network. The at least one gateway (10) and the at least one mobile switching center (4) are further coupled to a terrestrial communications network (PSTN). The system further includes at least one dual mode or higher user terminal (7) having a first transceiver for bidirectionally communicating with the gateway (10) through the satellite (8), a second transceiver for bidirectionally communicating with the mobile switching center (4) through the repeater, and a controller, responsive to one of a user selected or a gateway selected protocol, for selectively enabling either the first or the second transceiver for conveying a user communication to the terrestrial communications network (PSTN).

Abstract: A satellite communications system (10) includes at least one satellite (12); a system controller (38); a plurality of gateways (18); and at least one user terminal (13) operable for bidirectionally communicating with at least one of the gateways through the at least one satellite. Individual ones of the plurality of gateways are bidirectionally coupled to at least one terrestrial communications system (4) and act to couple the user terminal to the terrestrial communication system through at least one satellite. In accordance with an aspect of this invention, individual ones of the plurality of gateways are operable for receiving an access request from the user terminal, through at least one satellite, and are further operable for notifying the requesting user terminal, through at least one satellite, that the user terminal is one of accepted by the gateway for establishing a communication link and not accepted by the gateway for establishing the communication link. A gateway that does not accept a user terminal can indicate to the user terminal, based at least in part on a determined location of the user terminal, an identification of a gateway to which the user terminal should apply for access or log-in purposes. The system further includes a data network (39) that interconnects the system controller and the plurality of gateways. The data network may be conveyed by and embodied in one of a wired network, a wireless network, and a combination of a wired network and a wireless network.
