Abstract: @ A syringe for collecting blood samples, especially arterial blood samples, comprises a syringe cylinder (11) and a piston assembly (12) displaceably arranged therein. The piston assembly defines a venting passage (25, 37, 31) through which gas or air may escape when arterial blood flows into the cylinder space (17) under the influence of the arterial blood pressure. The venting passage is controlled by valve means (23, 31), which may selectively and reversably be opened and closed independently of axial displacement of the piston assembly. The valve means may, for example, be operated by rotating a piston rod through a predetermined angle or by means of a valve actuating lever (35), which is biased towards a position in which the valve means are closed, and which may be tilted to an open position by depressing a finger grip (36) positioned at the free outer end of the piston rod (32).

Abstract: @ A syringe for collecting a sample of blood or another liquid comprises a syringe cylinder and a piston arranged displaceably therein. One or more axially extending recesses are formed in the inner wall of the syringe cylinder axially spaced from the inner end thereof. The recess or recesses contain a material which is pervious to gas and impervious to liquid, such as a hydrofobic material, a hydrophilic material with capillary effect, or a material which swells when contacted by liquid. The sample collecting chamber within the cylinder may be vented to the atmosphere by placing the piston in the recessed area of the cylinder. Arterial blood may then pass into the syringe under arterial blood pressure, and the flow of blood into the syringe is automatically stopped when the sample collecting chamber of the syringe has been filled, because blood cannot pass the liquid impervious material arranged in the recesses. The axial innermost portion of the inner cylinder wall, which is not recessed, may co-operate with the piston in a conventional manner so as to provide a suction effect within the blood collecting chamber, if desired.

Abstract: In accordance with the principles for transcutaneous measurement of a blood parameter, such as the partial pressure of a blood gas, an electrochemical measuring electrode device (1) is applied to the skin surface (2) of a person. The electrode device comprises a body (10), e.g. a thick film substrate, which is thermostated to a predetermined temperature and, furthermore, includes sensor means (11) together with a membrane (14) confining an electrolyte solution within an electrolyte reservoir (15). Furthermore, the electrode device includes a jacket comprising an annular metallic body (16), a metallic body (4) and a thick film substrate (8) which is thermostated to the same temperature as the body (10) of the electrode device. When the body is brought into contact with the skin surface, an annular surface part of the jacket is also brought into contact with the skin surface so that a virtual heating jacket is established in the skin beneath the annular surface part so as to substantially direct all heat flow from the body to tissue directly beneath the skin surface. By measuring the power supplied for thermostating the body to the predetermined temperature, the local capillary blood flow in the tissue (2) beneath the skin is measured, and the blood parameter in question is measured by means of the sensor means (11). In an alternative operational mode, the electrode device is adapted to measure deep body temperature by thermostating the jacket to a temperature so that the temperature registered by a temperature sensor of the body and the temperature registered by a temperature sensor of the jacket are identical to one another and, consequently, identical to the deep body temperature.
