    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel system, method and apparatus for allocating power between at least two communication services that share a common power output limit. Two communication services particularly suited for the present invention are voi ce services and data services transmitted on the downlink of a wireless network. An embodime nt of the method includes determining the actual consumption of power on the voice channels of the wireless network during a given time period, and allocating substantially th e same amount of power to the voice channels for the next time period, thus allowing for the allocation of the remaining amount of power to the data services, and thereby allowing, for example, increased modulation of the data services and thereby improve overall rates of data transfer and/or reliability of data transmission. Another embodiment of the method includes determining the power requirements for at least one communication service during the current time period; and, allocating a portion of the power budget to each communication services based on the determination.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel system, method and apparatus for answering a telephone call. In one aspect of the invention, there is provided a system for call answering that includes a switch for connecting a telephony device to incoming calls received from callers connected to the switch via a telephone network. The switch is also connected to a processing unit and a storage device that contains a plurality of pre-recorded messages. When a callee at the telephony device receives an incoming call during a meeting (or at some other inconvenient time) and yet the callee wishes to respond to the caller, then the callee can provide (via a keypad on the telephony device) message selection criteria to the processing unit. The processing unit can then assemble an outgoing message based on the message selection critiera. The message is assembled from from the plurality of messages saved on the storage device. Having assembled the message, the processing unit can then play that outgoing message to the caller. In this manner, the callee is afforded a way to discretely respond to the caller without having to interrupt the meeting (or other activity that makes it inconvenient for the callee to answer the call.)

    Abstract: A communication structure and method which allows connection-like and connectionless communications to be provided on a multiplexed link is provided. The structure and method can make efficient use of available transmission capacity and/or network resources while providing for both types of communication. Connection-like communications can be provided by a channel having allocated bandwidth dedicated to the communication while connectionless communication can be provided by a shared channel through which data can be transmitted to subscribers. In an embodiment, the shared channel transmits frames of packets addressed to one or more of the subscribers. The frames can have a robustly packaged header that can be received by all subscriber stations serviced by the base station while payload data in the frame can be packaged with a level of robustness appropriate for the intended subscriber station. Different packagings can include different encoding and/or modulation of the payload data. The allocation of bandwidth between the dedicated channels and the broadcast channel can be fixed, or can be managed to meet network or network operator requirements. The structure and method can also be managed by the network operator to permit prioritization of some communications over others. In another embodiment, two or more shared channels are provided. In another embodiment, dedicated channels can be created with different amounts of bandwidth and/or can employ modulation and/or encoding selected according to the reception-quality of the recipient station.

    Abstract: A data channel to transmit data from a transmitter to one or more of a plurality of receivers, each of which intermittently reports to the transmitter its reception quality of signals transmitted by the transmitter. The transmitter transmits the data in frames which include at least one block. Each block includes the same predefined number of traffic symbols, and includes a header portion and a payload portion. The header portion of each block is packaged for transmission in a robust manner, enhancing the probability that each receiver will be able to recover it and the header portion includes information required to recover the payload portion. The payload portion is, in accordance with the reception quality reported by the intended receiver, packaged to make efficient use of the transmission resources while ensuring a reasonable probability that the intended receiver will be able to recover the payload. The header portion can include indications of the modulation, forward error correction and repetition utilized to package the payload and can indicate the length of the payload.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel system, method and apparatus for managing voicemails over a wireless local loop. The system provides for the placement of a voicemail client local to the subscriber and a voicemail serv er at the base station. The voicemail server and voicemail client cooperate wit h the base station to determine appropriate times to transfer voicemails over the WLL and thereby free-up bandwidth on the WLL for higher priority traffic , such as voice calls. Another embodiment of the invention provides a method f or receiving voicemails utilizing the system. Yet another embodiment provides a method for delivery of voicemails from a caller to destination subscriber. Various prioritization criteria can be used to provided desired utilization of bandwidth.

A combiner combines the signals passing through the signal paths, such that the sum of the electrically-adjustable attenuation provided by the signal paths adds to unity, whereby the input signal is delayed by an adjustable time depending upon the attenuations provided by the signal paths.
