Abstract:
Hydrocarbons are produced by contacting a gaseous mixture comprising carbon monoxide, hydrogen and at least one unsaturated hydrocarbon, the unsaturated hydrocarbon being present in an amount less than 50% molar, with a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst under Fischer-Tropsch conditions.
Abstract:
A supported Fischer-Tropsch catalyst contains a minor amount of an element of Groups VI and/or VII of the Periodic Table. Production of CO2 is reduced.
Abstract:
Reactions taking place within a membrane bounded system are monitored by introducing a membrane passing reactant mimic into a medium in contact with the system and observing changes in the reactant mimic with an electrode. The reactant mimic is a substance capable of undergoing an electrochemical reaction within the membrane-bounded system in a way similar to substances retained within the membrane. The process may be used to study reactions in e.g. mitochondria.
Abstract:
A container for the storage and transportation of pressurised fluids comprising a thermoplastic inner liner which is stable and impervious to the fluid to be contained therein up to a predetermined temperature but is fluid-pervious above the temperature, a fusible plug portion and an outer layer of an insulating fire resistant material encasing the inner liner but exposing the fusible plug portion.
Abstract:
Catalysts as prepared by impregnating a carbon support with a halogen-containing compound of Ru, reducing the Ru to metal with hydrogen, and then depositing an alkali metal and a barium compound. The catalysts may be used for ammonia production.
Abstract:
Novel trans-1,2-bis(dihalophosphino) cycloalkanes (I) wherein the alkane moiety contains from 3 to 12 carbon atoms, trans-1,2-bis ADdi(X)-phosphino BDcycloalkanes (II) wherein the alkane moiety contains from 3 to 12 carbon atoms and X is either hydrocarbyl or alkoxy and the resolved enantiomers of (II). Compounds (I) are produced by reacting a C3 to C12 cyclic olefin with a trivalent phosphorus compound of the formula PX3 wherein X is chlorine or bromine in the presence of elemental phosphorus. Compounds (I) are converted to compounds (II) by reaction with an (X)-containing carbon nucleophile.
Abstract:
Working fluid for an absorption refrigerating machine comprises trifluoroethanol as refrigerant and defined nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds as absorbents.
Abstract:
Carboxylic acid esters are produced by reacting an unsaturated hydrocarbon, for example an olefin or an alkyne, with carbon monoxide and an alcohol in the presence of a protonic acid and as catalyst (a) at least one of the metals palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and cobalt, and (b) copper. In a modification of the invention carboxylic acids are produced by omitting the alcohol reactant and replacing it with water in an amount up to 8 mole equivalents based on the unsaturated hydrocarbon and a solvent other than an alcohol, for example tetrahydrofuran.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A composition for use after reductive activation as a catalyst in the conversion of synthesis gas to hydrocarbons, the composition having formula: RuaAbCeOx, wherein A is an alkali metal, x is a number such that the valence requirements of the other elements for oxygen is satisfied, a is greater than zero and less than 5% w/w, based on the total weight of the composition, b is in the range from zero to 10% w/w, based on the total weight of the composition, and Ce and O constitute the remainder of the composition, is produced by the steps of: (A) adding a solution or solutions of soluble compounds of the metals ruthenium and cerium, and optionally also an alkali metal compound, to a solution of a precipitant comprising a carbonate and/or a bicarbonate and/or a hydroxide of an alkali metal or ammonium under conditions whereby there is formed a precipitate comprising ruthenium and cerium, and optionally also an alkali metal, in the form of compounds thermally decomposable to the metals and/or their oxides, and (B) recovering the precipitate obtained in step (A).
