Abstract: PURPOSE: An illumination method of a liquid crystal display device, a display unit for realizing the same, and a liquid crystal display device having the unit, are provided to improve the display characteristics and the viewing angle, and reduce the number of optical sheets for minimizing the thickness and weight of the LCD. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display device includes a backlight assembly(500) having a light source and a diffusion sheet for diffusing first(531) light generated by the light source to project second light(201) of uniform luminance, and a display unit(400). The display unit includes a lower polarization plate(200), an LCD panel(100), and an upper polarization plate(300). The lower polarization plate polarizes and focuses the second light to project third light(101) having improved and polarized front luminance. The LCD panel includes two substrates(110,120) and liquid crystal interposed between the substrates. The LCD panel projects fourth light(301) including image information and having a deflected optical axis by deflecting the optical axis of the third light. The upper polarization plate controls the light intensity of the fourth light and diffuses the fourth light, thereby projecting fifth light with controlled light intensity and wide viewing angle.
