Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a living polymer that has a narrow molecular weight distribution and that can be converted to a terminally functionalized polymer or block copolymer by polymerizing an olefin at a specified temperature using a catalyst which comprises a Hf- or Zr-containing compound and a phenyl group-containing borane compound or borate compound. SOLUTION: A 2-20C olefinic monomer is polymerized with the use of a catalyst which comprises a Hf- or Zr-containing compound having one or two cyclopentadienyl skeletons and a borane compound represented by B(Ph)3 (wherein Ph is phenyl which may be substituted) or a borate compound represented by B-(Ph)4X+ (wherein X+ is a cationic group) and in some cases, further comprises an aluminum compound at -20 to -100 deg.C in the case of the use of a Hf-containing compound or at -60 to -100 deg.C in the case of the use of a Zr-containing compound to thereby produce a living polymer having a Mw/Mn of 1-1.3.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and easily prepare an inexpensive catalyst for polymerizing an olefin, easily to be handled and useful for polymerizing ethylene or the like by including a bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium halide, a dialkylaluminum halide or the like. SOLUTION: This catalyst is prepared by including (A) a bis(cyclopentadienyl) titanium halide [preferably bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium chloride], (B) a reaction product of a compound [preferably bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride] of the formula: Cp2Zr(X) (Y) (wherein, Cp is cyclopentadienyl; X and Y are each a halogen or the like) with an aluminum trichloride (preferably aluminum trichloride) and (C) a dialkylaluminum halide (preferably diethylaluminum chloride). The quantities of zirconium included in the ingredient B and the ingredient C are 0.5-1.5 g atom and 10-30 g mol respectively based on 1 g atom titanium in the ingredient A.

SOLUTION: An aliphatic hydroxy compound is reacted with carbon dioxide and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (a-1) a polynuclear metal complex compound containing at least one selected from a tin atom, a titanium atom and an iron atom and a palladium atom as a metal center, (a-2) a polynuclear metal complex compound containing plural palladium atoms as a metal center or (a-3) a palladium complex compound containing an organic compound containing two or more nitrogen atoms as a ligand and (b) a redox catalyst to produce an aliphatic carbonic ester.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain an aromatic carbonate ester useful as an intermediate for synthesizing organic compounds from an aromatic hydroxy compound in one step and in a high yield by using a specific multi-nuclear metal complex compound and a redox catalyst as catalysts. SOLUTION: This method for producing an aromatic carbonate ester (for example, diphenyl carbonate) comprises reacting (A) an aromatic hydroxy compound (for example, phenol) with (B) carbon monoxide and (C) oxygen in the presence of (D) a multi-nuclear metal complex compound having plural Pd atoms as the metal center for example, dichlorobis[methylenebis(diphenylphosphine)]dipalladium] and (E) a redox catalyst [for example, Mn (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate)3]. The component D is preferably used in an amount of 1×10-8 to 0. 5 mole as Pd per mole of the component A, and the component E is also preferably used in an amount of 0.1-100 moles per mole of the Pd of the component A.

SOLUTION: A conjugated diene monomer or a mixture thereof with copolymerizable monomers are polymerized or co-polymerized in the presence of a catalyst that is prepared by bringing (A) an organometallic compound of a transition metal in group IV in the periodic table bearing a cyclopentadienyl skeleton into contact with (B) at least one kind of co-catalyst selected from (i) an organoaluminum oxy compound, (ii) an ionic compound that reacts with the component A to form a cationic transition metal compound, (iii) a Lewis acid compound that can react with the component A to form a cationic transition metal compound and (iv) an organometallic compound of a metal in the main groups I-III in the periodic table under the conditions satisfying the formulas I and II [(t) is a contact time (minute); T is a contact temperature ( deg.C)].
