Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a thermal recording layer having excellent water resistance and chemical resistance, by using a photosensitive polyvinyl alcohol having a structural unit of a specified general formula, as a binder. CONSTITUTION:A thermal recording layer provided, on a base, with a thermal recording layer comprising a color forming substance, a color developer and a binder as main constituents is produced as follows. For example, the color forming substance and the color developer are separately dispersed in a particle size of not more than several micrometers by a ball mill or the like while using a binder, the two dispersed liquids thus obtained are mixed with each other, and an adhesive, a filler, a surfactant or the like is appropriately added to the resultant mixture to obtain a coating liquid for forming a thermal color forming layer. The coating liquid is applied to a sheet form base such as a paper or a plastic sheet. A photosensitive polyvinyl alcohol having a structural unit of general formula I, wherein R is a quaternary aromatic nitrogen- containing heterocyclic ring residue, R is hydrogen or a lower alkoxyl, m is 0 or 1, n is an integer of 1-6, is used as the binder. The applied material is irradiated with UV rays without heating, thereby providing the thermal recording layer with excellent water resistance and chemical resistance.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide excellent water resistance and chemical resistance and lower the possibility of adhesion of scum to a thermal head at the time of recording, by using a photosensitive polyvinyl alcohol having a structural unit of a specified general formula, as a film forming high molecular weight compound in an overcoat layer. CONSTITUTION:A thermal recording material is produced as follows. For example, a color forming substance and a color developer are separately dispersed in a particle size of not more than several micrometers by a ball mill or the like while using a binder, the two dispersed liquids thus obtained are mixed with each other, and an adhesive, a filler, a surfactant or the like is appropriately added to the resultant mixture to obtain a coating liquid for forming a thermal color forming layer. The coating liquid is applied to a sheet form base such as a paper and a plastic sheet, and is dried at a relatively low temperature to provide a thermal recording layer. A film forming high molecular weight compound comprising a photosensitive polyvinyl alcohol having a structural unit of general formula I, wherein R is a quaternary aromatic nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring residue, R is hydrogen or a lower alkoxyl, m is 0 or 2, and n is an integer of 1-6, is applied to the thermal recording layer, and after drying, it is irradiated with UV rays by using a high pressure mercury lamp or the like to provide an overcoat layer, thereby obtaining the thermal recording material.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition capable of giving good solvent and moisture resisting properties, and forming a cured film having sufficient abrasion and print resisting properties after photopolymerizing it by incorporating a prescribed inorg. solid matter to a partially saponified vinylacetate polymer having a photocross-linkable group and a hydrophobic polymer emulsion. CONSTITUTION:The photosensitive resin composition is composed of an aqueous emulsion contg. the partially saponified vinylacetate polymer which has a styrbazolium group and 70-99mol% saponification degree, and the hydrophobic polymer emulsion. The aqueous emulsion contains 1-50wt% of water insoluble inorg. solid matter based on the solid component contained in the aqueous emulsion. Thus, the partially saponified vinylacetate polymer, which forms a continuous phase, is cross-linked and cured in the presence of the styrbazolium group as the photocross-linking group, and the emulsified ethylenic unsatd. compd. polymerizes, and binds with the hydrophobic polymer emulsion particles at an interface between the partially saponified vinylacetate polymer and the ethylenical unstd. emulsion particles, thereby forming a strong hardened film.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the yield of a fatty acid triglyceride in the production of the triglyceride by contacting a fatty acid with different kind of a fatty acid triglyceride, by using a lipase included in a hydrated gel particle of a specific polyvinyl alcohol, as an enzyme. CONSTITUTION:A polyvinyl alcohol derivative having a stilbazolium group and obtained by the reaction of a polyvinyl alcohol or a partially saponified vinyl acetate with styrylpyridinium is dissolved together with a lipase in water, and the aqueous solution is added to a hydrophobic medium, and irradiated with actinic light to effect the photo-crosslinking of the polyvinyl alcohol derivative having stilbazolium group and obtain a lipase included in the resultant hydrated gel particle. A fatty acid triglyceride and a fatty acid is made to contact with each other in a solvent in the presence of the above lipase as an enzyme to obtain a fatty acid triglyceride having different fatty acid residue.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce simply and economically an aqueous soln. by introducing a substituted styryl residue having a specified structure, using an acidic ion exchange resin as a catalyst for an acetal formation reaction or an acetal exchange reaction to carry out such a reaction, and treating the resulting mixture with a basic ion exchange resin. CONSTITUTION:Polyvinyl alcohol or modified polyvinyl alcohol and a compound having a substituted styryl residue represented by the formula (where R is a quat. chloraromatic N-contg. heterocyclic residue, R is H or lower alkoxyl, n is an integer of 1-6, and m=0 or 1) are dissolved in an aqueous medium, an acidic ion exchange resin is added, and they are stirred at a constant temp. At this time, the ion exchange resin and a very small amount of the styryl compound release protons by ion exchange, making the reactive soln. acidic, so an acetal formation reaction or an acetal exchange reaction proceeds. After the reaction is finished, a basic ion exchange resin is added and stirred at a constant temp. The pH of the liq. reaction product rises, and when the product is made neutral, the ion exchange capacity is increased to capture the unreacted substituted styryl compound by ion exchange. Thus, an aqueous soln. of a photosensitive resin is produced in simple and very economical stages.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer, which highly stabilizes the molecule aligned state with light with respect to heat, light or further electric field, is formable to a large area at a uniform film thickness, does not make a production process complicated, is not restricted in utilization as an optical element and is arbitrarily controllable in an alignment direction and a process for producing the same as well as the optical element using this liquid crystal alignment layer. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal alignment layer is constituted by subjecting a resin film containing a dichromatic photoreactive component unit, more preferably a latent liquid crystal or crystal resin film to photoirradiation with linearly polarized light or irradiation with non-polarized light from a diagonal direction and further preferably subjecting this film to a heat treatment and forming a non-photoreactive liquid crystal material layer thereon. This process for producing the liquid crystal alignment layer consists in subjecting the latent liquid crystal or crystal resin film containing the dichromatic photoreactive component unit to the photoirradiation with the linearly polarized light or the irradiating with the non- polarized light from the diagonal direction, then subjecting this film to the heat treatment and forming the non-photoreactive liquid crystal material layer on this resin film.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tilt oriented film for liquid crystals which has high productivity and allows arbitrary setting of a tilt angle without requiring the use of a polarizing element at the time of production and a liquid crystal orientation method and a liquid crystal cell. SOLUTION: This tilt oriented film is formed by irradiating a resin film contg. an isomerization reaction constitution unit with light of non-polarized light from a diagonal direction or is formed by irradiating the resin film which contains the isomerization reaction constitution unit and induces liquid crystal perpendicular orientation with the light of the non-polarized light from the diagonal direction. The liquid crystal orientation treatment method consists in irradiating the resin film contg. the isomerization reaction constitution unit with the light of the non-polarized light from the diagonal direction or irradiating the resin film which contains the isomerization reaction constitution unit and induces the liquid crystal perpendicular orientation with the light of the non-polarized light from the diagonal direction. The liquid crystal cell is constituted by arranging a substrate formed any of the tilt oriented films for liquid crystals described above and a substrate formed with the oriented films for liquid crystals which is the same as the oriented film described above or different therefrom so as to face each other and holding the liquid crystals between these substrates.
