    Abstract: A method performed in a portable computing device for intelligently performing audio playback, upon connecting with an audio output system. The portable computing device detects that a connection is made with an audio output system. The portable computing device determines a first audio playback application that last played audio and when the first audio playback application last played audio. If the first audio playback application played audio within a specified amount of time in the past, then the portable computing device signals that audio playback be performed from the first audio playback application (through the connection made with the audio output system.) If the first audio playback application did not play audio within the specified amount of time in the past, then the portable computing device determines a second audio playback application that last played audio when the portable computing device was previously connected to the audio output system and signals audio playback from the second audio playback application (through the connection made with the audio output system.) Other embodiments are also described and claimed.     Abstract: The present technology resolves playlist version conflicts resulting from modifications made to a playlist version, stored on a client device and in a cloud locker, when the client device and the cloud locker are in a disconnected state. The present technology is a heuristic for determining how to resolve such version conflicts. Upon reconnection of the client and cloud locker, the server, associated with cloud locker attempts to reconcile any version discrepancies resulting from user-initiated changes. In one embodiment, when the server determines that one of the playlists on the client or server is a superset of the other, the superset is selected and saved to both the client and cloud locker, while the subset version is deleted.

    Abstract: In a first embodiment a client devices assesses network performance (bandwidth) and determines from this a suitable quality level of an asset (eg. video/audio file) for downloading (Fig. 5b). In a second embodiment, in response to a play command a client device assesses if it stores locally a digital asset of a desired (high) quality. If not it assesses whether it is available from a cache or a cloud server and whether the network performance is adequate for downloading the asset. If so the asset is retrieved from the cache cloud. If a high quality asset is unobtainable, a lower quality asset may be played back. A similar local/cache/cloud assessment procedure applies. In a third embodiment the client may assess locally stored low quality assets and network performance in response to an upgrade event. If network performance is suitable the locally stored assets may be upgraded by downloading higher quality versions. This may happen as a background operation (Fig. 7).
