    Abstract: PURPOSE:To make it possible to improve the oxidative degradation resistance and bending strength of an anion exchange membrane while retaining its high performance at least equivalent to that of a conventional one, by constituting the membrane from a resin mainly consisting of vinylphenethylamine. CONSTITUTION:This anion exchange membrane is formed of a resin mainly consisting of vinylphenethylamine. By crosslinking part or the whole of the exchange groups with an aliphatic hydrocarbon when an ion exchange group is introduced into a membrane-form polymer, it is possible to improve the membrane performance or degradation resistance, such as electrochemical properties and selectivity to an extent higher than those of a conventional membrane and to improve its flexibility. In this case, it is preferable that the percentage of the anion exchange groups crosslinked is 20-100%. The vinylphenethyl-amine is represented by the formula (wherein R1 and R2 are each methyl or ethyl, and one in which both of R1 and R2 are methyl is preferable). Copolymerizable monomers usually used or monomers having a group convertible into an ion exchange group having polymerizability can be used in combination with the vinylphenethylamine.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the selective ion permeability and durability of a cation exchange membrane, by swelling a cation exchange membrane with a mixture of an organic material and water, and contacting the membrane with a polymeric substance having anion exchange group, thereby forming a thin layer to the surface of the membrane. CONSTITUTION:(A) A polymer having anion exchange group such as quaternary ammonium group, primary-tertiary amino group, etc. is used as the selectivity- improving agent. The compound A is dissolved or dispersed in the mixture of water and (B) an organic material having a molecular weight of =0.1% at the treating temperature, e.g. dimethylformaldehyde, ethanol, etc. Separately, a cation exchange membrane is impregnated with the mixture of water and the compound B, and is made to contact with the above solution or dispersion. A layer which does not cause the increase in the electrical resistance of the cation exchange membrane can be formed on the surface of the membrane. The amount of the compound A dissolved or dispersed is preferably 0.1- 50g per 1l of the treating liquid.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce leak out of a tank, by integrating the spacer of an electrified current passing part or the spacers of the electrified current passing part and a brine passing part. CONSTITUTION:A spacer is inserted into an electrified current passing part or the electrified current passing part and a brine passing part of a gasket frame comprising a vulcanized rubber sheet and vulcanized rubber is embedded in the parts of at least mutually opposed two sides of the spacer while the vulcanized rubber and the gasket frame are integrated to form a gasket. This gasket is prepared by a method wherein the spacer is inserted at least into an unvulanized rubber filling part so as not to be contacted with the gasket frame and the unvulcanized rubber is subsequently filled to be vulcanized. The gasket frame mem ber pref. comprises a vulcanized rubber sheet with a thickness of 0.2-2mm. and JIS HS hardness of 30-95 deg. and formed by punching the sheet like vulcanized rubber molded by a calender roll.
