Abstract: New alpha-cyanocinnamaldehyde derivs. (I) are prepd. by condensing benzaldehydes with cyanoacetaldehyde in a basic medium, pref. at 15-100 degrees C. Basic medium is generated esp. by using an alcoholate. (I) obtd. are opt. hydrogenated to the alpha-cyano-dihydrocinnamaldehyde (II), e.g. with Pd/C as catalyst. 3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzyl-cyanoacetaldehyde and its semi-acetal are specifically claimed. (I) are starting materials for prepn. of heterocycles, esp. 2,4-diaminopyrimidines. (I) are obtd. in good yields, e.g. 84%. In hydrogenating (I) to (II), aldehyde gp. is not reduced to an alcohol gp. In an example, alpha-cyano-trimethoxy-cinnamaldehyde is prepd. by adding 3,4,5-trimethoxy-benzaldehyde to reaction mixt. obtd. by adding an isoxazole soln. to an MeONa soln. and MeOH.
