Abstract: The catalyst is removed in the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols, which are alkyl-substituted at the two ortho-positions but not at the para-position and may or may not be alkyl-substituted at the meta-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15 DEG to 50 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained from a copper salt and an organic amine, in the presence of from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a solvent per part by weight of the monomeric phenol, and in the presence or absence of an activator, and removal of the metal component of the catalyst from the polyphenylene ether solution with a complex-forming or chelate-forming compound in aqueous solution, in the presence or absence of reducing and stabilizing substances and assistants for accelerating the interphase reactions and for phase separation, by a method in which the continuous removal of the copper catalyst is carried out in one or more mixer-settler stages at a phase volume ratio of the organic phase to the aqueous phase of from 1:0.1 to 1:1.0, preferably from 1:0.4 to 1:0.6.

Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic moulding composition comprising: A a copolymer based on ABS, which is formed from an elastomer (rubber) based exclusively on butadiene, onto which a copolymer of a vinylaromatic monomer having 8 to 9 carbon atoms and acrylonitrile has been grafted, and a copolymer (hard matrix) built up from 50 to 90 % by weight of a vinylaromatic monomer having 8 to 9 carbon atoms and from 50 to 10 % by weight of acrylonitrile, and, in each case based on 100 parts by weight of A, B from 200 to 20 parts by weight of a poly(oxamide) having a viscosity index, VI, of from 8 to 80 ml/g which contains the structural unit of the formula (I) as a recurring copolymerised unit in the polymer chain, in which the radical R is a substituted or unsubstituted C2-C25-alkylidene, C5-C30-cycloalkylidene, C2-C80-oxaalkylidene group or a substituted or unsubstituted, monocyclic or polycyclic arylidene group, in which the arylidene radicals may be linked to one another via bifunctional groups. The moulding composition can contain conventional flameproofing agents C and/or a halogen-free component D (synergist for C) and conventional additives E. It is preferably used for the production of mouldings.

Abstract: A thermoplastic molding material consists of a polycarbonate A and a graft copolymer B, the latter consisting of an elastomer (rubber) (b1) and a shell (b2) grafted onto the elastomer. The elastomer (b1) contains, as copolymerized units, from 35 to 100% by weight of a diene from the group consisting of the conjugated dienes of 4 to 5 carbon atoms, and can contain, as copolymerized units, from 0 to 65% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The shell (b2) is obtained in a conventional manner by successive polymerization of the monomers constituting the shell, in two process steps, in the presence of the elastomer (b1); in a first process step, from 10 to 90% by weight of a mixture of a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon and one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers which differ from the said hydrocarbon, in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 60:40, are first incorporated as copolymerized units, followed by the polymerization of from 90 to 10% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or of the alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The molding material is used for the production of shaped articles.
