Abstract: Liquid crystal compositions forming a cholesteric phase with a pitch of less than 450 nm, comprising either at least one polymerizable chiral liquid crystal monomer or a mixture of at least one polymerizable achiral liquid crystal monomer and at least one chiral additive, are used as ultraviolet filters for protecting skin or hair against solar radiation. Liquid crystal compositions forming a cholesteric phase with a pitch of less than 450 nm, comprising either: (a) at least one polymerizable chiral liquid crystal monomer of formula (I); or (b) a mixture of at least one polymerizable achiral liquid crystal monomer of formula (II) and at least one chiral additive, are used as ultraviolet (UV) filters in cosmetic and pharmaceutical compositions for protecting human skin or hair against solar radiation: A -A = spacers with a chain length of 1-30C; Y -Y = bonds, O, S, C(O)O, OC(O), CH=CHC(O)O, OC(O)O, C(O)N(R), N(R)C(O), CH2O, OCH2, CH=N, N=CH or N=N; M , M = mesogenic groups; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; Z = H, 1-4C alkyl or a polymerizable group, at least one being a polymerizable group; Z , Z = H, 1-4C alkyl or polymerizable groups, at least one being a polymerizable group; X = an n-valent chiral group; m, o, p = 0 or 1; n = 1-6. Independent claims are also included: (1) use of the liquid crystal compositions as photostable UV reflectors; (2) use of the liquid crystal compositions as UV stabilizers in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations; (3) pigments containing the polymerized liquid crystal compositions.

Abstract: Described is a method for marking liquids with at least two marker substances. The marker substances are absorbent in the spectral range of 600 to 1200 nm and emit fluorescence radiation as a result. The absorption range of at least one marker substance overlaps the absorption range of at least one other marker substance. Also described is a method for detecting marker substances in liquids which have been marked by the above method. This method is characterised in that the sources of radiation used emit radiation in the absorption ranges of the marker substances, so that the fluorescence radiation emitted by the marker substances can then be detected. At least one of the radiation sources emits radiation in the absorption range in which at least one marker substance overlaps with at least one other marker substance, and the number of sources of radiation used is smaller than, or the same as, the number of marker substances. Also described are liquids which have been marked by the above method.

Abstract: Phthalocyanine compounds of formula (I), wherein: X is twice hydrogen, twice lithium, magnesium, zinc, copper, nickel, VO, TiO, AlCl, AlOH, AlOCOCH3, AlOCOCF3, SiCl2 or Si(OH)2, at least four of the radicals R1 to R16 independently are a five or six-membered saturated nitrogenous heterocyclic radical which is bonded to the phthalocyanine via a ring nitrogen atom and is derived from pyrrolidine, pyrazolidine, imidazolidine, oxazolidine, isoxazolidine, piperidine, piperazine, morpholine or thiomorpholine; the remaining radicals R1 to R16 are hydrogen, halogen, hydroxysulfonyl or dialkylsulfamoyl; wherein at least four of the radicals R1 to R16 are not N-methylpiperazine or N-ethylpiperazine. The compounds are useful for marking liquids such as mineral oils that contain phthalocyanines of this type.
