    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as an agent of dope with a high torsional strength for a cholesteric liquid crystal and capable of shifting a reflected wave length of a cholesteric compound into the visible spectrum by using an extremely slight amount thereof. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I [a group A is a spacer e.g. (CH2 )p ((P) is 1 to 12) or (CH2 CH2 O)q CH2 CH2 ((q) is 1 to 3); M is a mesogenic group having 2 phenylenes bound to each other through e.g. O, CO or OCO and unsubstituted or substituted with e.g. an 1-4C alkyl or methoxy group; Y is a polymerizable group e.g. a direct bond O, S; (m) is 0 or 1; (n) is 2 to 6; and X is a chiral group e.g. of formula II], e.g. a compound of formula III obtained by reacting bis(4'-hydroxylbenzoyl)-1,4:3,6-dianhydrosobbitol with 4-acryloxybutyloxycarbonyloxybenoyl chloride. A compound of formula I is pref. used in the copolymerized form with a known nematic compound.

    Abstract: The invention concerns polymerizable liquid-crystalline compounds of the general formula (I) Z -Y -A -Y -M-Y -A -Y -Z in which the variables have the following meanings: Z , Z are radicals with reactive groups which can bring about polymerization; Y - Y are a chemical single bond, oxygen, sulphur, -O-CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO-O-, -CO-NR-, -NR-CO-, -O-CO-NR-, -NR-CO-O- or -NR-CO-NR-, at least one of the groups Y and Y meaning -O-CO-O-, -O-CO-NR-, -NR-CO-O- or -NR-CO-NR-; A , A are C2-C30 spacers in which the carbon chain can be interrupted by oxygen in the ether function, sulphur in the thioetherfunction or by non-adjacent imino or C1-C4 alkylimino groups; M is a mesogenic group; and R is C1-C4 alkyl. The compounds and compositions containing them are distinguished by advantageous liquid-crystalline phase temperature ranges and can be used in optical display units and cholesteric liquid-crystalline colouring agents.
