Abstract: Process for halogen substituted o-benzoylbenzoic acids from indanes of general formula (I) by oxidising with nitric acid and/or hexavalent chromium cpds. using 1.5 times the stoichiometric ratio in relation to the indane. (R1, R2, R3 are alkyl and R1, R3 may also be H, X and Y are both halogen or one may be H. Also di-halogen substituted o-benzoylbenzoic acids with the halogen atoms on each benzene ring ortho or meta to the carbonyl gp. specifically 2-(o-chlorobenzyl)-6-chlorobenzoic acid) (I) are used as intermediates for anthraquinones the process is simpler and cheaper than the Friedel Craft method.
