Abstract: 1-Aminoanthraquinone dyestuffs (I) used in LCDs are of formula (I) (in which R is a carboxylic ester or amide gp. X is NO2, NH2, arylamino or OH gp.). (I) have a partic. high dichroitic ratio and good light fastness and solubility in liquid crystal media. They can also be prepd. easily in pure form. Specifically (IA) (in which R is COOMe and X is NH2) in a nematic phase had a dichroitic ratio, CR, of 9.7 and deg. of order, S= (CR-1)/(CR+2) of 0.74.

Abstract: Imidazolylmethyl-substd. dyes of formula (I) are new. In (I) R1 is H, 1-6C alkyl or 2-6C alkenyl; R2 and R3 are H, 1-5C alkyl or 2-5C alkenyl; R4 is 1-12C alkyl or 2-4C hydroxyalkyl; X is an equiv. of an anion; D is a (m+n)-valent residue of a mono-, dis- or polyazo dye, a quinophthalone, a bisdioxazine, a 5-6-arylo-2-pyrone cpd., a naphtholactam, triphenylmethane or xanthene dye, a phthalocyanine, an indigoid, an anthraquinone dye contg. at least one phenyl or naphtyl gp., a higher fused- ring carbonyl dye, a quinacridone, a perylene-3,4,9,10-tetra- carboxylic diimide, an anthra-pyrimidine, a pyrazolo- anthrone, a diamino-naphthoquinone, a naphthazarin or a naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetra-carboxylic diimide; m is 0-5; n is 0-5; m+n is 1-5). (I) are useful as cationic dyes for cellulosic fibre materials, esp. for prodn. of coloured paper with good wet fastness. Dyeing with high tinctorial strength are obtd., and waste waters are practically colourless. Paper coloured with (I) where D is a phthalocyanine residue can be decolorised with chlorine bleaches, thus facilitating waste paper processing.

Abstract: Imidazolylmethylene gp.-contg. dyes of formula (I) are new. In the formula, R1 is H, 1-6C alkyl or 2-6C alkenyl; each R2 and R3 independently is H, 1-5C alkyl or 2-5C alkenyl; R4 is 1-12C alkyl and X(-) is an anion. F is a (m+n)-valent residue of a phthalocyanine, indigo or an anthraquinone dye contg. at least 1 Ph gp., a higher annellated carbonyl dye, equinacridone, perylen-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide, anthrapyrimidine, pyrazolanthrone, diaminonaphthoquinone, naphthazerine or a naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid diimide; where m is 0-5 and n is 0-5, providing that m+n is greater or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 5. Specifically claimed are cpds. where F is a (m+n)-valent residue of a copper phthalocyanine, (iso)violanthrone, naphthoylen- benzimidazole or an anthraquinone bis-acridone, and (i) each R1 and R2 independently is H, 1-4C alkyl (pref. H or (m)ethyl), R3 is H, R4 is 1-4C alkyl and (n+m) is 1-4; and (ii) each R1 and R2 independently is H, 1-4C alkyl, R3 is H, n is 1-4 and m is O. (I) are esp. useful for dyeing cellulose fibres, e.g. as paper, in fast shades. The dyes are prepd. from readily available, non-toxic starting materials without formation of undesired by-prods. (as in some prior art procedures employing chloromethyl cpds.). Dyeings produced by the claimed dyes contg. a phthalocyanine residue can be decolourised with sodium hypochlorite, which is advantageous in reprocessing waste paper.

Abstract: Chlorination of (a) perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid, its anhydride or bis-imides, (b) naphthalic acid, its anhydride or bis-imides, or (c) anthraquinone or its derivs. in ClSO3H, 70-100 wt.% H2SO4, or in oleum at 40-160 (pref. 50-130) degrees C., is catalysed by the presence of aromatic iodine cpds. The amount of aromatic iodine cpds. is pref. 1-15 (esp. 3-12) wt.%, based on the amount of cpd. to be chlorinated. USes Halogenated perylene tetracarboxylic acid anhydrides are dyes for natural or synthetic fibre textiles and plastics. Halogenation products of naphthalic acid and its imide and of anthraquinone and its derivs. are dye precursors.
