Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance recording stability and record-holding capability, by provid ing on a carrier a monomolecular film or a built-up film thereof of a metal chelate complex having a C=N linkage capable of librating a metal ion or a metal atom by being isomerized when irradiated with light. CONSTITUTION:A two-layer built-up film of chelate complex molecules consisting of a syn-form chelate ligand molecules 1 and metal ion or metal atom 3 is provided on a glass base 4 to produce a recording medium. The medium is immersed in a liquid phase 5 contained in a container having a bottom surface constituted of a transparent glass plate 6, and is then irradiated imagewise with light 7 which can supply energy required for photo-isomerization, e.g., UV rays, whereby the syn-form chelate ligand molecule is converted to an anti-form chelate ligand molecule, thereby librating a metal ion 3. The recording medium having librated all of metal ions 3 is taken out from the liquid phase, and is dried to obtain a recording medium with information recorded thereon.

The structure of azobenzene deriv. having a pyridine ring as a ligand, and a long-chain alkyl group and a carboxylic group as substituents for forming a monomolecular film on the surface of water is represented by formula (1), and decanoic acid is used as a combination of the long-chain alkyl group and the carboxylic acid.

CONSTITUTION:The image forming layer 3 composed of a phase-transitive org. compd. A having an unsatd. bond in the molecular structure and a functional compd. B, and a resistance heating layer 2 for giving heat energy to the image forming layer 3 are formed, the layer 2 is heated as bias for forming an image to cause phase transition of the compd. A of the overlying layer 3, resulting in converting the layer 3 into a fluid state. The layer 3 is exposed to light 6 in accordance with a pattern for forming an image or input information, e.g., at a prescribed position 5 to cause optical change of the molecule B. The displayed image can be seen or read by illuminating the layer 3 from the reverse side with illumination light 7, thus permitting an image high in compactness and resolution to be formed, not only a still image but also mov ing images, including slow motion and animation pictures to be displayed, and accord ingly, this image forming element to be used for simple devices for display, recording, memory, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an image forming element to be used in simple displayers, recorders, and memories, which is capable of giving high-contrast images, by providing an image forming layer composed of a phase transitionary organic compound having hydrophobic and hydrophilic portions and also having unsaturated bonds in its molecular skeleton and a functional molecular having hydrophilic and hydrophobic portions. CONSTITUTION:A functional molecule being used has an image forming function (displaying, recording, and storing functions) and information conversion function (arithmetic function) other than image conversion, including functional manifestation by not only light and electric energy but also heat, magnetism, pressure, and substances. The functional molecule composing the film with a phase transitionary organic compound is selected from materials capable of exhibiting its functions in softened state where it is chemically changeable. When the film is heated to a temperature higher than the phase transition temperature to keep the organic compound in softened state, the functional molecule is under a chemically changeable condition, and thereby quick response (functional manifestation) to input energy is exhibited.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an image forming element to be used in simple displayers, recorders, and memories, which is capable of being given highly contrast pictures, by providing an image-forming layer composed of a phase transitionary organic compound having no unsaturated bonds in its molecular skeleton and a functional molecule. CONSTITUTION:In an image forming element of transmissive or reflective type, an image-forming layer 2 composed of a film containing a phase transitionary organic compound and a functional molecule, a protecting base plate 3, and a base plate 1 are provided. The image forming element of transmissive type, for example, is based on an image forming principle that a phase transitional change is brought about in the phase transitionary organic compound as the constituent of the layer 2 by heating and on the basis of pattern or input information in the layer 2 in the fluidized and softened state, light (infrared rays, visible rays, ultraviolet rays, or X rays) 5 is irradiated onto a desired place 4 to cause photochemical change in the functional molecule. The region 4 of photochemical change is directly or indirectly displayed or read out while irradiating illumination light 6 from the back side of the element.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain such a high density recording medium which induces a chemical change or physical change in a molecular unit by providing the monomolecular film of a chelate compd. having the C=N bond which desorb metallic ions or metallic atoms by syn-anti isormerization when applied with the rays of light or the cumulative film thereof and electrodes. CONSTITUTION:The chelate coordinate molecular film cumulated with the trans-type chelate coordinate molecules 2 to two layers is formed on a glass substrate 5 on which a transparent electrode 7 is deposited by evaporation. The substrate constituted by fetching metallic ions (or metallic atoms) 3 on the glass substrate 5 on which another transparent electrode 7 is deposited by evaporation and laminated with a fatty acid 4 is formed and is disposed to face the above-mentioned substrate. A bias voltage is applied between both electrodes and cis type isomerizing light 6 consisting of the light such as UV rays and visible light which can supply the energy necessary for isomerization is irradiated thereto according to a certain pattern. Then the photoisomerization reaction arises in the irradiated part where the transfer to the syn-type chelate coordinate molecules arises and the metallic ions 3 are fetched to permit the recording of information. Monitor light 10 is then irradiated to a recording medium and the change in the absorption of the light is read from transmitted light 9, 9' by which the recording is reproduced.

A soln. for film formation wherein a molecule group for film formation is dissolved in volatile solvent such as benzene is dropped on the liquid surface with a known method, for example, a filler or the like to spread a monomolecular film consisting of the molecule group on the liquid surface. Desired surface pressure is added to the monomolecular film on the liquid surface with a float 3 to maintain the state of a suitable solid film for the formed film. When the cylinder 16 is turned while maintaining the state of the solid film, the monomolecular film or a monomolecular cumulative film having desirable cumulative degree is formed on the cylinder 16.
