Abstract: Earthmoving vehicles are often provided with quick coupling devices that allow them to change work implements in a relatively rapid fashion when compared to changing conventionally mounted implements. In most cases, the performance of the work implement is sacrificed to accommodate the ability to change implements quickly. In other cases the level performance is satisfactorily maintained, but the actuation of the coupling mechanism must be done manually or has no ability to accommodate loosening between the coupler and the work implement that can result from normal operation. The coupling device (10) of the present invention allows an operator to change implements (12) from his position within his operating station, yet maintain a structure that will not sacrifice the performance of his work implements (12) through alteration of the linkage arrangement (14) or through additional weight. The locking means (64) between the coupler (10) and the implement (12) are positioned for the optimum transferal of force between the components and include a means (96) which will continually take up any loosening that may occur through wear or operational loading.

Abstract: A head gasket assembly (18) is used for sealing a joint between a cylinder block (12) and a cylinder head (14). At least portions of the head gasket assembly (18) must withstand high temperatures, high pressures and be flexible for sealing fluid passages such as lubricating oil and cooling water mixtures. The present head gasket assembly (18) is comprised of a main gasket body (40) constructed of a sealing material (46) having a plurality of apertures (48, 50, 52) positioned therein. A portion of the plurality of apertures (48, 50, 52) includes a combustion opening (52) having a fire ring (54) positioned in the periphery of the combustion opening (52). A plurality of tape strips (60) having an end portion (62) attached to a side of the sealing material (46), partially surrounding the fire ring (54) and another end portion (64) attached to the other side of the sealing material (46). Thus, the flexible main gasket body (40) and the rigid fire rings (54) are fixedly attached together and provide a head gasket assembly (18) which has very good handleability, sealability and functional characteristics.

Abstract: Construction vehicles of the type having a pair of lift arms extending from the frame to support a work implement, have generally been restricted to operating one specific tool. The attempt to combine the operation of several different work implements has been met with severe functional restrictions since some work implements have specific requirements not found in the operation of others. In order to provide a lift arm linkage arrangement (25) that incorporates the functional requirements necessary to operate a plurality of work implements (38) while maintaining a simple, yet efficient construction, an electronic control means (90) has been included in the design. The electronic control means (90) includes a plurality of sensors (142, 144) that are operatively associated with the lift (42) and tilt (56) means of the lift arm arrangement (25). The sensors (142, 144) enable the electronic control means (90) to constantly monitor the current position of the lift arms (26) and the work implement (38) and compare them with a programmed sequence of movements. The electronic control means (90) is further able to automatically adjust the position of the lift arms (26) and the work implement (38) in accordance with the programmed sequence.

Abstract: Neutralizer valves are useful in hydraulic steering systems to hydraulically stop the steering motion. However the known neutralizer valve arrangements will not work in load sensing hydrostatic steering systems. The subject load sensing hydrostatic steering system (17) has a limit valve (42, 43) disposed in a load pressure signal line (41) to normally communicate a load pressure signal from a steering valve (23) to a displacement controller (21) of a load sensing variable displacement pump (18) so that the displacement of the pump is regulated to meet the demand for pressurized fluid by the steering valve (23). When a pair of vehicle members (11, 12) reach a preselected position during a steering maneuver, the limit valve (42, 43) is moved to a position interrupting communication of the load pressure signal to the displacement controller causing the pump to destroke to its minimum output thereby stopping the flow of pressurized fluid to the steering valve (23) and to a pair of steering cylinders (14, 16). The limit valve (42, 43) remains in the actuated position only momentarily and then moves back to the communicating position to permit steering of the vehicle in the opposite direction substantially immediately after the vehicle members reach the predetermined position.

Abstract: Fluid systems having fluid motors which control aiding type loads many times have problems with cavitation in one end of the fluid type motor during lowering thereof. It is desirable to eliminate all cavitation in the fluid motor during operation. In order to eliminate cavitation during lowering of an aiding type load and to provide a positive pressure therein, the subject arrangement provides an exhaust pressurizing control (184) for use in a fluid system (10). The exhaust pressurizing control (184) includes an exhaust manifold means (80) having selector means (88) to provide a positive pressure in the exhaust manifold means (80) during lowering of an aiding type load (W1). The selector means (88) includes pressure limiting and unloading means (90) operative to provide a positive pressure in the exhaust manifold means (80) during lowering of the aiding type load (W1) and to unload the pressurized fluid in the exhaust manifold means (80) during raising of a resisting type load (W1). The pressurized fluid in the exhaust manifold means (80) is available to the fluid motor (16) through anti-cavitational valve means (109). This arrangement effectively eliminates cavitation in the fluid motor (16).

Abstract: An apparatus (102) determines the payload carried in a work vehicle (104) by monitoring the pressure of a fluid contained within front and rear suspension struts (106, 108). The struts are connected in supporting relation between a load carrying portion (110) and a ground engaging portion (122) of the work vehicle (104) such that a compression condition of the strut (106, 108) is detected while the work vehicle (104) is in motion. Abstract: The design and construction of past pushrod retainers have required complex components, sliding relationships and additional assembly time and expense. The present invention overcomes these problems by using a retention shelf (144) attached to a cylinder block (14). Thus, the components are simple to install, inexpensive to manufacture and do not increase assembly time since there is no adjustment necessary when using the device. The present retention shelf assemblies (142) provide a device which prevents extensive damage to the engine (12) caused by a large separation between the cupped end (96) of the pushrod (94) and the first end (50) of the rocker arm (46) which allows the pushrod (94) to fall into other components, resulting in malfunction of the engine (12). The device is preassembled to the cylinder block (14) and requires no additional assembly time or alignment when assembling the engine (12). The device is inexpensive to manufacture and prevents the pushrod (94) from causing damage to the engine (12) should the first end (50) of the rocker arm (46) not be moved to the second operating position (84) causing the pushrod (94) to become free or disconnected.

Abstract: A fluid control circuit (10) for controlling the disengagement of first and second drive mechanisms (12, 14) and the engagement of first and second brake mechanisms (16, 18) for a track-type vehicle has a fluid pump (50) and first and second foot operated fluid control valves (22, 24) in fluid communication with the pump (50). Shifting of either control valve (22, 24) individually disengages the associated drive mechanism (12, 14) and engages the associated brake mechanism (16, 18). Shifting of both control valves (22, 24) concurrently, engages both first and second brake mechanisms (16, 18) while the first and second drive mechanisms (12, 14) remain engaged. Conventional track-type vehicles use two pedals to sequentially control the disengagement of first and second drive mechanisms and the engagement of associated brake mechanisms . A third pedal controls engagement of both brake mechanisms without disengaging the drive mechanisms. The three pedals complicate the control system and create a crowded operator's station. The subject control circuit (10) uses only two pedals (62, 64) to operate two control valves (22, 24) to disengage the drive components (12, 14) and engage the brakes (16, 18).

Abstract: Prior art non-generated, tip-relieved spiral bevel gears had tip-relieved surfaces that were nonuniform from the toe to the heel thereof. The subject tip-relieved spiral bevel gear (10) is adapted to be manufactured by a gear generating machine (32), and includes a plurality of modified gear teeth (14) individually having a convex tooth face (24) and a relatively uniform tip-relieved surface (29) on the convex tooth face from the toe (18) to the heel portion (20) thereof essentially parallel to the face angle (A) at the outer tip surface. A two-pass method of machining the modified gear teeth is described.
