Date Jan. 25, 1996It is known to isolate MHA from a reaction mixture obtained by the addition of hydrocyanic acid (HCN) to methyl mercaptopropionic aldehyde (MMP) and the hydrolysis of the methyl mercapto propionic aldehyde cyanohydrine (MMP-CH) obtained thereby with sulphuric acid, in which the reaction mixture is brought into contact with a substantially non-water-miscible organic solvent, in order to form an extraction solution having the solvent and MHA transferred from the reaction mixture, and the MHA is obtained as an extract from this extraction solution by concentration. The simplest and most economical process of the invention concerning the processing of the reaction product which facilitates the production of a highly concentrated product with an extremely low dimer, oligomer and by-product content, is characterised in that the concentration is conducted in such a way that the remaining extract contains less than 4 wt % and preferably less than 2 wt % of water. Animal feed supplement, mixtures for supplementing animal feed, e.g. with methionine or ammonium-MHA.

    Abstract: Phenol or phenol-formaldehyde containing waste water is purified with chlorine dioxide by treating the waste water with alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorite in the presence of formaldehyde and the weight ratio of formaldehyde to phenol is between 0.5 to 2:1 and the mole ratio of the sum of phenol + formaldehyde to chlorite is between 1:1.2 to 1:2, whereupon the treated water is decolorized, in a given case in known manner.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to a process for the production of iminodiacetonitrile by reaction of hexamethylenetetramine with hydrogen cyanide in acidic aqueous mediums. In this process the pH during the reaction which is 5.5 to 7.5 at the beginning is progressively lowered, altogether around 0.5 to 3.5 units and free formaldehyde is present only to a slight extent. Through this and in contrast to the known processes the formation of byproducts is suppressed and iminodiacetonitrile is produced directly in very good yields and sufficiently pure for further use.
