Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fluorescence-life measuring apparatus by which a change in terms of time of fluorescence can be measured with high time resolution and efficiently. SOLUTION: Light from a pulse light source 11 is branched into two luminous fluxes by an optical branching filter 12. One luminous flux is made incident, via a gate optical system 2, on a detecting medium 6 as gate pulses used to observe fluorescene. The other luminous flux is made incident via an exciting optical system 3, on a substance 4, to be measured, as exciting pulses used to generate fluorescence. The detecting medium 6 is irradiated with the fluorescence from the substance 4, to be measured, via a fluorescence optical system 5. At this time, a fluorescent component which passes a region in which a change in a refractive index due to a nonlinear optical effect generated in the detecting medium 6 due to the gate pulses is induced is observed as a fluorescent image by using a change in a polarization state, Its position change is observed so as to correspond to a change in terms of time. The change in terms of time in the fluorescence, especially a fluorecence life, can be measured with high time resolution.
