    Abstract: Aqueous polymer dispersions based on (A) 1 to 99% by weight of a carboxy-functional polymer which additionally contains epoxy groups, (B) 1 to 99% by weight of a polymer obtained from at least one alpha , beta -olefinically unsaturated monomer, the polymer (B) having been prepared in the presence of polymer (A), (C) 0 to 20% by weight of anionic or non-ionic emulsifiers or a mixture of the two or protective colloids, the quantity data relating to the solids content of components (A) to (C), and if appropriate further conventional additives, the sum of all the components always being 100%. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of such polymer dispersions, which are particularly suitable as a binder component in metallic basecoats or metal-free, (uni) basecoats and electrocoatings.

    Abstract: A reactive hardenable polymer mixture which comprises A) at least one epoxy compound and B) at least one polycarboxylic acid compound in the form of a component selected from the group consisting of a) at least one compound of formula and (I) (Ia) wherein R1 is a radical derived from at least one polymeric product containing hydroxy groups selected from the group consisting of a polymerisation and a condesation product and a combination thereof in the form of polyesters, polymers each having a hydroxy number between 20 and 300, phenol resins having a hydroxy number between 100 and 800 and combinations thereof, R2 is a radical of an at least tetrabasic cyclic carboxylic acid having at least one COOH-group in an o- or peri-position to the ester bond, R5 is a radical of an at least dibasic cyclic carboxylic acid having at least one COOH-group in o- or peri-position to the ester bond and R5 may also be as defined for R2; b) at least one tetrabasic cyclic carboxylic acid compound having 2 carboxylic groups in an o- or peri-position or at least one anhydride group or both together with at least one of the OH-group containing compounds from which the above defined group R1 is derived; c) at least one compound corresponding to formula (I) or (Ia) as defined under a) but with the proviso that the anhydride groups are replaced at least partially by a free acid or ester group or by both; d) at least one compound as defined under b) wherein the anhydride groups of the polycarboxylic acid compounds are replaced at least partially by a free acid or ester group or by both; and e) any combination of a) to d), a process for the preparation of hardened products in hardening said composition.

    Abstract: Aq. polymer dispersions are based on (A) 1-99 (wt.)% carboxy-functional polymer also contg. epoxy gps., (B) 1-99% copolymerisable alpha,beta-olefinically unsatd. monomer(s), (C) 0-20% anionic and/or nonionic emulsifiers or protective colloids (all w.r.t. solids) and other conventional additives. The dispersions are prepd. by free radical emulsion polymerisation of the given components at 0-150, pref. 20-100, esp. 40-90 deg.C in the presence of (D) 0.01-10, pref. 0.02-5, esp. 0.05-3% polymerisation initiator(s) w.r.t. (B), pref. without addn. of emulsifiers and/or protective colloids. Pref. the amt. of each of (A) and (B) is 5-95 wt.%. The compsn. may also contain 0.01-20% (w.r.t (B)) of monomers with max. 3 alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. gps. (B) consists of up to 100% methyl methacrylate and/or butyl acrlate (esp. 15-80% methyl methacrylate and 15-50% n-butyl acrylate), 0-20% (esp. 0-15%) hydorxyethyl methacryalte, 0-20% (esp. 0-15%) glycidyl methacrylate and 0-20% (esp. 0-5%) (meth)acrylic acid. The dispersions have a solids content of 5-75, pref. 10-65%.

    Abstract: 20731-1103 Aqueous polymer dispersions based on A) 1 to 99% by weight of a carboxy-functional polymer which additionally contains epoxy groups, B) 1 to 99% by weight of a polymer obtained from at least one .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated monomer, the polymer B) having been prepared in the presence of polymer A), C) 0 to 20% by weight of anionic or non-ionic emulsifiers or a mixture thereof or of protective colloids, the percentage by weight relating to the solids content of components A) to C), and if appropriate further conventional additives. The invention also discloses a process for the preparation of such polymer dispersions, which are particularly useful as a binder component in metallic basecoats or metal-free (uni) basecoats and electrocoatings. Compared with similar dispersions known from the prior art, the dispersions allow the formulation of rheologically controllable metallic basecoat paints which, after application, show good intercoat adhesion combined with excellent stability on storage in water.
