    Abstract: A step-size estimator for controlling the step-size of an adaptive equalizer incorporated in a transceiver, (e.g., a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU)). The step-size estimator updates at least one adaptive equalizer tap used by the adaptive equalizer based on an apparent speed of a channel established between the transceiver and another transceiver. The step-size estimator includes a speed estimator, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) averager and a step-size mapping unit. The speed estimator is used to estimate the apparent speed of the channel, (i.e., the observed and/or measured rate of change of the channel impulse response). The SNR averager generates a common pilot channel (CPICH) SNR estimate. The step-size mapping unit uses the speed estimate and the CPICH SNR estimate to generate a step-size parameter, µ, and a filter taps leakage factor parameter, ±, used by the adaptive equalizer to update the filter tap coefficient.

    Abstract: A communication system including an amplifier, a receiver, an analog to digital converter (ADC) and an insertion phase variation compensation module. The amplifier receives a communication signal. If the amplifier is enabled, the amplifier amplifies the communication signal and outputs the amplified communication signal to the receiver. If the amplifier is disabled, the amplifier passes the communication signal to the receiver without amplifying it. The receiver outputs an analog complex signal to the ADC. The ADC outputs a digital complex signal to the insertion phase variation compensation module which counteracts the effects of a phase offset intermittently introduced into the communication signal when the amplifier is enabled or disabled.

    Abstract: A communication system including an amplifier (105), a receiver (110), an analog to digital converter (ADC 115) and an insertion phase variation compensation module (120).     Abstract: A system and method for establishing initial synchronization for the link between a UE and a base station in a communication network uses window exclusion logic in order to avoid a deadlock condition upon a detection of the wrong public land mobile network (PLMN). The communication signal is processed in a three step decision process. The first decision step determines a chip offset of the strongest path detected over a frame of samples. In response to the first decision, the second step generates a scrambling code group number and slot offset for retrieving the secondary synchronization code. The third decision step retrieves a primary scrambling code in response to the code group number for synchronizing the UE to the base station.
