    Abstract: Methods and systems for monitoring rotating shafts (28) and couplings (30) i n an aircraft vehicle propulsion system (22) is described. The measurement system/method provides for accurate and precise monitoring of a rotating sha ft flexible coupling in a fixed wing aircraft vehicle propulsion system (22). T he measurement system/method provides for a high reliability short take off vertical landing fixed wing aircraft in which the vehicle's dynamically rotating drive shaft system (28) and couplings (30) are monitored in real time. The vehicular shaft coupling misalignment measuring system utilizes multiple positional sensors (40) to provide highly reliable and precise determination of the dynamic characteristics of the rotating sensor target components of the propulsion system drive shaft (28). The relative position of the sensors (40) is rigidly fixed externally from the rotating targets with a structural frame. The misalignment measuring system provides a misalignment measurement of the propulsion system drive shaft flexible coupling which relates to a critical performance of rotating shaft (28) coupling in the operating of an aircraft vehicle (20). The method/system provides for monitoring a rotating drive shaft system and dynamically measuring a rotatin g drive shaft coupling in a fixed wing aircraft propulsion system (22).

    Abstract: A hybrid active-passive system (20) for reducing noise within a passenger compartment and vibration of a fuselage of a vehicle, such as an aircraft (turboprop, turbofan, or helicopter). The hybrid active-passive system (20) includes, in combination an active acoustic producer such as a loudspeaker (35), Active Vibration Absorber (AVA) (34), or active absorber assembly (39) for producing antinoise within the compartment (42), and a passive resonant device, such as a passive Tuned Vibration Absorber (TVA) (36), or passive TVA assembly (37) for controlling vibration of the fuselage or structural supports interconnecting the disturbance source (e.g. power plants (26), propellers (28a), gearbox (57), main rotor (28m), tail rotor (28t)) and the fuselage wall (25).

    Abstract: A transducer (26) is directly associated with a fluid-type damper (18) having a cover member (36) and a cylinder member (28) that undergo telescopic movement relative to each other in response to relative movement between vehicle components (12,14) interconnected by the damper (26). In the preferred embodiments, both a passive electrical coil (40) and a magnet (44) are mounted upon the cover member (36), in fixed relationship to each other. Relative axial telescoping movement between the cover member (36) and the cylinder member (28) of the damper (26) changes the flux field of the magnet (44) and induces in the coil (40) a voltage which is proportional to the relative velocity between the damper members (36,28) and thus between the vehicle components (12,14) interconnected by the damper (26). In an alternative embodiment, the magnet (44 min c) is mounted upon an end portion of the damper cylinder member (28c).
