    Abstract: An amalgam assembly for a fluorescent lamp includes a glass exhaust tubulation extending toward a base portion of the lamp, the tubulation being closed at an end thereof adjacent the lamp base portion, and a retaining structure disposed in the tubulation and retained by a pinched portion of the tubulation. A mercury amalgam body is disposed in the tubulation between the retaining structure and the tubulation closed end. The amalgam body includes means for wetting internal surfaces of the glass tubulation to cause the amalgam to adhere to the tubulation internal surfaces when the amalgam body is liquidized, and to thereby prevent the amalgam from flowing past the retaining structure and into the lamp envelope.

    Abstract: A reflector lamp 10 has a vitreous outer envelope 12 formed of a concave reflector 14 and a light-transmitting 16 cover peripherally sealed thereto. The concave reflector and cover are symmetrically arrayed about a longitudinal axis 18 and a substantially cylindrical, hollow neck 20 having a given depth is affixed to the concave reflector opposite the cover. The neck 20 also is symmetrically arrayed about the longitudinal axis 18 and has a substantially closed bottom 21. At least two eyelets, 22, 24, respectively, are sealed in the bottom 21 and a light source capsule 26 is positioned in the concave reflector and aligned with the longitudinal axis 18. The light source capsule 26 has a first end 28 situated in the neck 20 and a second end 30 extending into the concave reflector. The light source capsule 26 comprises a quartz arc tube 32 containing an arc generating and sustaining medium and a surrounding aluminosilicate glass shroud 34. First and second conductive lead-ins 36, 38, respectively, are sealed into a first seal 40 formed at a first end 42 of the shroud 34. Each of the lead-ins 36, 38 has a first portion 44, 46, respectively, sealed in one of the eyelets 22, 24. The first conductive lead-in 36 has a second portion 48 extending interiorly of the shroud and connecting a first electrode 50 of the arc tube and contains a bend or offset 49 to take expansion differences during operation. The second lead-in 38 has a second portion 54 terminating within the first seal 40. An outer conductor 56 has a first end 58 sealed in a second end 60 of the shroud 34 and connects a second electrode 62 of the arc tube 32. A middle section 64 of the outer conductor 56, which is surrounded by an electrically insulating sleeve 57 for at least part of its length, extends exteriorly of the shroud 34 and has a second end 66 connected to the second said lead-in 38. A conventional screw base 68 completes the lamp.

    Abstract: A closed-loop, tubular lamp envelope (50) and methods of manufacturing closed-loop, tubular lamp envelopes are disclosed. A dome (58) is formed at one end of a light-transmissive tube (52). A blister is molded on the dome (58), and a hole is formed in the molded blister. Next, a dome (62) is formed at the other end of the light-transmissive tube (52). A blister is formed on the dome (62), and a second hole is formed in the molded blister. Each of the molded blisters includes a rim (56,60) which defines the respective hole. A second tube (54) is processed in the same way. The respective rims (56,70;60,66) at the ends of the first (52) and second (54) tubes are fused together to form a sealed, closed-loop lamp envelope (50). Each tube (52,54) may be bent to provide a desired shape of the lamp envelope (50). The molding of the rims (56,60,66,70) insures that the sealing surfaces match.
